Pathfinder Interest Check

Postby DM Unliving » Wed Oct 05, 2016 10:16 am

Hello Everyone!

I have a Pathfinder game that I am ready to get off the ground. Some warnings here, characters do not start off as adventurers or heroes - they will start off as NPC classes. The game will start off in a small village in the Lands of the Linnorm Kings near the Grungir Forest. The game will not stay in the Lands of the Linnorm Kings, and will travel to many places.

Anyone interested?

I generally like PF games, because they are high fantasy and have better rules and online support than D&D.

But why are you looking at NPC classes?

If you were thinking that you just wanted humble beginnings, you could have the PCs start off at like 1/2 level without even full 1st level features to show younger apprentices in their professions.

Starting out as a commoner doesn’t really hold all that much appeal for a fantasy game without knowing why it would be fun. 1st level already feels rather sucky and fragile as it is.

I did it that way because there i no one in the village to even train for a full heroic class. Most of the first part when using the NPC classes is roll playing and skills. I do not want characters to have heroic abilities at that point. They will be getting them after a traumatic event.

Hmmm. What is the premise then?
I would need more on what to expect to sell me on playing a Commoner with no real talents or abilities. Preludes can last a long time in PbP, so I would need something to look forward to. ;)

Basically the PCs have just reached the age, for whatever race they are, of adulthood. In their village they must undergo a RIte of Passage. While they are gone something happens to the village so when they come back their lives are changed. They are sent somewhere, for a reason they don't know, that will reveal a major secret to their past that they don't know. This is when they gain the normal PC class. That is just the beginning of the game.

Are we getting to pick the PC class or is that GM determined?

Oh no, you will pick your own class. I will be giving extra stuff out, but I will not choose the player's class.

Would we really be taking NPC class levels?

Or just starting out at 0-level with some skill points, no BAB or Saving Throw Bonuses, 4HP, no class features, Simple Weapon Proficiency only, and maybe a Background Trait or something that fits starting in a small village (some do, some don't).

I originally planned on having an NPC class taken. However,, I am considering allowing people to take the class they would want to take later, but -

No class features
Normal traits (2, plus 1 drawback for a trait allowed)
Simple Weapon Proficiency
HP, BAB, Saving Throws, Skills as normal for class
If the class has Light Armor Proficiency player can keep that

I will be using the Background Skills rules.
Players must have an idea what their characters were going to do in their life in the village. What were they training to do - Hunter, Guard, Blacksmith, Farmer, etc.

Yeah, I like background skills. It works well for something like this where the PCs probably have 1 rank in a profession skill to reflect intended adulthood career.

That is a big reason I want to use it for this game.

Oooo, I have an aasimar and a hobgoblin character out of work. We'll have to see if there is not some more interest out there.

PM invited me. Looks fun! Count me in! I'm down with whatever class/not-class option is started. Is this a one off adventure or a big campaign? What eventual classes are allowed? Pointbuy?

Thanks for having me play if you will!
