RR: The Harvest Festival (IC)

Among the mysteries that surround the Fog Peak Mountains, perhaps the most fantastic is the legend of the Jarl of the North Wind. Supposedly, somewhere in these remote peaks, this supernatural sovereign dwells in a fabulous ice palace surrounded by a golden fortune rich enough to tempt even the most accomplished rogue. Whimsical and vindictive, he jealously guards his castle’s secret location and throws intruders into the icy maze beneath his treasury, dooming them to wander through the twisting passageways until they inevitably freeze to death.
Of course, most sensible people consider these tales to be little more than myth. After all, no form of magical divination has ever succeeded in finding this Jarl or his supposed palace.
But the stories persist, and through the years a surprising number of people have set off into the mountains to look for the fabled fortune; most of these were never heard from again. Most sages agree that although the Jarl and his fortune probably don’t exist, there is something in the mountains that makes them dangerous to explore. The stories remain popular, though, and every once in a while a traveler emerges from the wilderness claiming to have seen the Jarl, his famous treasure, and his infamous maze of ice.

The group had been traveling on the way to Edme following their latest adventure. The Trade Road passed through the village of Azurestone, a popular base camp for hunters. Their arrival coincided with the village’s autumn festival. They decided to stay for a couple of says to use the opportunity to buy and sell some goods, catch up on news and gossip, and otherwise relax a bit after their latest escapade.

Although the last of the falling leaves litter the ground, the people of Azurestone were in high spirits. Like leaf-laden dust devils, they flitted about the village in their gay autumnal attire in celebration of the annual harvest festival. The market square bustled with activity: farmers had brought in their abundant crops to trade with merchants, who displayed the latest fashions and fads from the cities of the south.

Minstrels and performers seeking to earn some coin brought tales of goings-on in the world at large. Particularly popular were songs about the Red Raven, a swashbuckling bandit who steals from the high and mighty and spends his wealth freely among the common folk. The villagers do not fear the coming season: the centerpiece of the festival was the Vernal Key, an artifact that has shielded Azurestone from the cold of winter for centuries.

The group had booked a pair of rooms in the Lattice Inn and were taking an evening meal in the attached tavern.

Inside the hospitable Lattice Inn, there sat a friendly elf. This elf relaxed by his lonesome at a plain wooden table. Upon first glance, it would appear to be just another elven traveler, perhaps an author, writing a book... but this was no author. A closer inspection would reveal that this particular elf is a wizard, and he was transcribing another set of magical workings into his spell book.

The book was perfectly straight and centered in front of him, his writing utensils position with straight angles, and the ink jar the perfect proportional distance between the book and his hand. With slow, careful, very deliberate strokes, he dutifully composed some arcane symphony. Hours passed without interruption. After his current masterpiece was in the final throes of completion he calls up to the barkeep. "Some more red please, something dry if you will? A thousand thanks!"

Tibbideau hobbles into the cheerful tavern leaning heavily on his gnarled walking stick. Seeing Ky'rie sitting alone, the rat decides to keep him company. Taking a seat across from the elf just in time to hear his order of dry wine, Tibbideau catches the eye of the barkeep and holds up two fingers to indicate his similar interest.

Nodding a greeting to Ky'rie, the rat mage decides not to disturb the elf mage during his work. Letting his gaze drift around the room, Tibbideau absent-mindedly rubs his left arm in an attempt to ease the pain that ever plagues him. Realizing that his ache was great this evening, Tibbs removes the small clay pipe from his robe and sparks the herbal smoke to life. Soon the pain would subside... sooner if the wine would come.

The whiff of the rat’s herbal indulgence finally induces Ky’rie to join the present moment. Recognizing the aroma before lifting his eyes, Ky’rie smiles. “Hello there Tibbs, I didn’t hear you ramble in! You know those pipes will take years off of your life. Look at me... never took one toke and I’ve sailed passed one hundred years and counting! Your arm troubling you again?”

Tibbideau's expression falls a bit as he thinks back to those days of captivity, but the memory is an old one and the rat quickly cracks a crooked smile.

"You know my sob story well enough my friend. My 'master' wanted a weapon, not an apprentice. He spliced powerful beings into me, mad creatures of ineffable darkness with terrible wills. I fought every moment of every day to keep my sanity... I still do.

Anyway, the experiments left my brain bruised and bleeding and with my body shattered that madman finally thought me dead. But I live still! No thanks to him."


Tibbideau repeats his last comment in a mutter as he pulls again on his pipe.

Stepping into the group's favorite watering hole, the young woman generally understood to be Char takes in the sights, sounds and smells of the place. In short order, she turns towards Tibb and Ky'rie, her eyes cutting through the relative gloom. Grabbing a drink from the bar on the way by, she comes and takes a chair, dressed in her typical hodgepodge mix of cloth, leather, fur and feather. "Nobody sick today," she comments flatly, "and I haven't the mind for carving. Maybe get some commission work. How's things for you two?"

"Ootah?" Char begins, asking as if to verify, but then continuing right away. "Seen her about. Not today. Over six feet and two hundred pounds, you'd think she'd be tough to lose." As she speaks, Char is obviously taking a close look at Tibb. "But, you," she begins, head bobbing gently as she studies him from various angles, "injuries burned into you by foul magics. Scars are enough, but magic scars... Maybe, some day, some strong magic can be found. Ease pain." With that, she sighs.

The door to the Lattice Inn crashes open as a familiar shadow looms in the doorway. "Friends!", Ootah's voice booms across the taproom, causing several patrons to look up from their drinks. She takes a look at who's having what, then turns to the bar,grinning at the half-orc behind it. "More drinks!", she says, putting several silver and copper coins on the bar. Once her round has been poured, she carries the assorted mugs and glasses to the party's table and sits down heavily. "All good?", she enquires. "Any work? Need more of these" - she pokes wistfully at her money pouch - "for more of these" nodding at the drinks.

The rat mage whips his head around as the wildling crashes through the door with a gleeful smile. Few things had interested him as much as the raw power and persona of the half orc druid since they joined company. Maybe it was the orc blood in himself that reacted so strongly to Ootah's presence, or perhaps it was that she was all he was not... either way Tibbideau admired her, and always enjoyed her freshness.

"More coin Indeed! And more weapons. Ye gods how badly I crave fire! Far to long it's been!"

Tibbideau scrunched his brow suddenly and waves it away with a laugh and a raise of his tankard.
