Red Raven [OOC]

Among the mysteries that surround the Fog Peak Mountains, perhaps the most fantastic is the legend of the Jarl of the North Wind. Supposedly, somewhere in these remote peaks, this supernatural sovereign dwells in a fabulous ice palace surrounded by a golden fortune rich enough to tempt even the most accomplished rogue. Whimsical and vindictive, he jealously guards his castle’s secret location and throws intruders into the icy maze beneath his treasury, dooming them to wander through the twisting passageways until they inevitably freeze to death.
Of course, most sensible people consider these tales to be little more than myth. After all, no form of magical divination has ever succeeded in finding this Jarl or his supposed palace.
But the stories persist, and through the years a surprising number of people have set off into the mountains to look for the fabled fortune; most of these were never heard from again. Most sages agree that although the Jarl and his fortune probably don’t exist, there is something in the mountains that makes them dangerous to explore. The stories remain popular, though, and every once in a while a traveler emerges from the wilderness claiming to have seen the Jarl, his famous treasure, and his infamous maze of ice.

Good grief you people, are you sure you all know what you're asking, letting Ootah do the talking? They'll run us out of town! ;-)

Seriously, it's cool with me; I'll try to post something later today.

I would hope not, although Ootah definitely did. Again, I'm happy to have her engage with the townsfolk on the group's collective behalf, but she's possibly one of the worst spokespeople you could get, if your aim is to get delicate negotiations completed to mutual satisfaction. :-)

Charisma is not a reflection of how well you talk to people per se or even sociability. It is a reflection of how convincing you are naturally when it comes to Bluffing, Diplomacy, and Intimidation. If you are not trying to influence any one, then a low or high charisma score doesn't matter. Low charisma does not mean social wallflower. ;)

I had a real boisterous jerk of a character with Cha of 8, and it never stopped me from dealing with NPCs and even negotiating. I even rolled Diplomacy checks when needed, sometimes on my own and other times to Aid Another. It just was much harder to bend folks to his will, that's all. He could get discounts or increases in payments, pretty much having to accept the job offers as they were presented.

Charisma is a bit complex compared to other, more direct, stats. That's probably why not all games have it, but go for other options to get to the game mechanics in question. I would agree low Charisma isn't low sociability or being a wallflower by definition, but there is a correlation insofar that low Charisma characters are more likely to be antisocial or something of a wallflower. Of course, it works the other way, as well. Ultimately, it's stitched into the complete personality laid out by the player, and is, hopefully, coherent when taken as a whole. Nothing wrong with a Cha 8 character with no social skills who is unafraid to get in there and say his peace. About the only thing that grates my goat is players who dump stat Cha, do things that are in the classes of actions covered by the social skills, and don't want a roll (with according penalty) to apply to them.

Sorry for being quiet. I just packed my folks onto the bus to the airport and I get to rest some before heading to Hokkaido for a baseball tournament next week. Should be back to normal ops on 31 July. I will try to update all my games at least once.

Yeah, I like when people RP their stats and take them into account when working the developed personality of their character. We have a good group here that does that most of the time... at least I think I do it. :p
