FF: Serving with Captain Corsair [IC]

Image
A cataclysm of flooding was destroying the world, the waters to eventually rise and leave the mountains as islands scattered throughout. The gods showed the peoples floating ore and wizards spelled it to levitate. Some of the doomed cities and realms were able to salvage themselves by quickly magicking the ore in the foundations of their cities to float them into the sky. Now sailing ships float through air and winged mounts carry transportation and trade between the islands on the roiling seas and in the sky.

Aboard The Lady SlipperNo one said goblins were smart… or maybe it is just they are crazier or too brave for their own good.

Image
Captain Corsair had rang the bell for recalling the The Lady Slipper’s crew once the town’s alarm had been sounded. The watchtower had spotted an approaching boat in the sky along with two flying creatures just after suppertime, approaching dusk in early evening.

Image Image Image
Now they were engaged in a fight in a fight to deal with the raiding monsters. A goblin war party must have captured a wooden skiff that had been converted to floating. Unable to sail it, they were using long oar-like fans to maneuver the boat along with two goblins riding on giant vulture holding tow ropes.

Kearyth had brought the ship straight on to investigate and once the distance had closed to about 100 yards, the goblin riders had dropped the tow ropes to begin swooping attacks. The Captain cried out, “Fall off 30 degrees to starboard! We will receive them on the port side! Man the ballista!”

Image Image Image
He gestured for Jakamo and Thadeus to man the one aft, leaving Boris and Leolamin to take the one forward. The Captain stood beside Kearyth who manned the control stone.

Leolamin was alert as the captain shouted out that goblins were attacking them. どうして私たちはすでに攻撃を受けていますか?(How come we get attacked this easily?) he thought, and followed Boris to the ballista.

They loaded the first spear, and his companion shot at one of the vultures. "Do you get attacked this easily on this ship?" the rakashan asked, as he reloaded the next one.

Leo was both concerned and curious about the vultures. Someday, he would have to try riding those flying creatures. But right now, he had other things to worry about than staring at the creatures.

Aboard The Lady SlipperImage
Rowing with the long fan-like oars was hard work and not the most efficient. But the goblin crew was propelling their flying skiff through the air and getting closer. They chanted as they came on, "Goblins cut, goblins slice,"
"Dey smash an' Dey dice,"
"Dey comin'g ta get ya,"
"An' gonna kill ya!"

Their wretched words could be heard over the gap between the two airships.

Image
Boris cursed as his shot missed by a couple of yards, "Dammit! The distance is still too far." He moved around to begin reloading, grabbing the next spear to be used. It was going to take a few moments.

"No, I cannot say this happens often, Leo. I have not served long and this would be the first time I seen those buggers in a flying boat."

Jakamo and Thadeus rushed to man the aft ballista. One man threw off the tie ropes securing the weapon in place, while the other began to take aim. Drills with the weapon came back under the stress as the two men handle the weapon with ease.

"C'mon buggers, stay still!" Muttered Jakamo as he took aim with the giant crossbow. When the wind seemed to calm for a second, and the man trigger the release and sent the ballista bolt flying. THe range was way off as the bolt missed by a large margin.

"What were you aiming at!?" Criticized Thad as the pair began to reload the ballista.

The range was still over 50 yards from the Lady Slipper to the flying vulture riders. The ballista spear fired by Jakamo was way wide and short.

Re: FF: Serving with Captain Corsair [IC]

Postby Kaeryth Klaern » Sat Feb 25, 2017 7:49 pm

It was just past supper when Kaeryth had taken the helm.

He was still new at flying, but he’d taken to it quickly, the control of the ship feeling as natural as walking on his own two feet. He didn’t know where that had come from. He’d been a student before the waters had come, and had spent most of his days indoors with books. Now he was actually flying ships.

He looked the very picture of a young pilot, with his long brown hair flowing back in the breeze, and his warm parka with its sheepskin ruff pulled up close around his neck.

He hadn’t expected anything like this, not pirates at least. His eyes widened and he gaped for a moment as he saw the approaching boat and flying vultures. But the captain had given an order, so he knew what he had to do. Kaeryth held out his hands and concentrated, willing the ship to shift to starboard, as the captain ordered. It was a standard maneuver, and not difficult, so the ship slipped through the air easily, and slowed. Better to stay and fight, rather than run, the captain seemed to be saying. They could run later, if it became necessary.

Aboard The Lady SlipperImage
Captain Corsair remained steady and calm as both of their initial ranging shots were wide. While the ship was not moving fast, it still made shots from their ballistae a bit more challenging. He said, "Good thinking, Kaeryth. It shall make it easier to hit if we are not moving so much."

"You can do better this next volley, lads," he offered by way of encouragement. "Just wait for them to close a little more and they will be easier to hit."

Kaeryth straightened his shoulders at the captain’s praise, standing taller, lifting his chin. He hadn’t expected it; he’d just acted on instinct. But apparently slowing the ship was the right thing to do. He smiled, briefly and secretly.

He held the ship steady, ready to react if he had to, but waiting for now to see how the next volley went.

“You guys can do it!” he called out.

The captain had encouraged the men, so he thought that he should as well.

“Just take a deep breath and let it out!”

It was what he did when he needed to focus.

Aboard The Lady SlipperImage Image
The tow goblins riding vultures continued to close. The one on the right was a better flyer or had a stronger vulture and was out-pacing the other. The pair was still about 50 yards away, though. However, the lead one was just barely in short range of the forward ballista.

Leolamin glanced around at the others, who missed as well.'集中して!'(Concentrate) he muttered under his breath.

The second one was loaded, ready to go. "We can do this, they are coming close," the rakashan said, preying to his god.

神様よ, お願いします! Boris fired at the vulture closer to the ship.

It didn't take long before Jakamo and Thad had the aft ballista loaded and ready to fire. The range had dropped in the interim.

"Wait a little bit, you impatient git!" Thad warned Jakamo. The other man nodded as the pair judged goblin riders to still be out of range.

"Right! Just a little bit you bugger!" replied Thad.

The pair waited for the range fell before firing.

Aboard The Lady SlipperImage Image
The ballista bolt flew so close that it clipped vulture feathers, causing the bird to falter in the air and lose some altitude. The goblin was nearly toppled from the saddle, but managed to maintain control. The bird and rider were still aloft.

Image
Boris tsked, “Eeh, that was much closer. I saw feather flying. I just gotta put it more center the chest.”

“What do you think, Leo, next shot on the vulture or the bugger ridin’ him?”

Image
The floating longship with two banks of goblin rowers, slowly propelled their craft forward to gradually close the distance. Their chanting could still be heard, “Cumin’ ta git ya… HUH. Gonna kilt ya… HUH!”

"I'mma firing, " growled Jakamo. He could tell the range wasn't going to drop before they had a chance to fire and still have time for another shot.

Thad grunted and watched the goblins.

The other sailor pulled the firing lever and the ballista bolt went flying.

The pair immediately bent to the task of reloading.

“That’s good! Keep going, fellows!”

Kaeryth thought he should keep encouraging the men. If they could get off some good shots and hurt the riders or their mounts and take them out of the fight, all the better before they had to deal with the longship’s ranged weapons.

He remained alert, ready to move the Lady Slipper if circumstances called for it, but for now, he kept her steady in the air.

Aboard The Lady SlipperImage
The Captain suggested, “Kaeryth, if you time it right, you could bring us closer or pivot us broadside so both fore and aft will be equal range when that flying skiff gets closer.”

Corsair remained calmly standing beside the half-elf manning the helm and control stone.

Image Image Image
The spooked vulture rider continued to struggle with his flying mount, unable to continue closing the distance. The other one farther back closed up beside and passed by. He was now within short range of the forward rear ballista as well.

The chanting goblins using those long fans to slowly propel the airborne skiff continued to work and closed the distance. They had still not gained much on the fast vulture riders.
