FF: Serving with Captain Corsair [IC]

Image
A cataclysm of flooding was destroying the world, the waters to eventually rise and leave the mountains as islands scattered throughout. The gods showed the peoples floating ore and wizards spelled it to levitate. Some of the doomed cities and realms were able to salvage themselves by quickly magicking the ore in the foundations of their cities to float them into the sky. Now sailing ships float through air and winged mounts carry transportation and trade between the islands on the roiling seas and in the sky.

Captain Corsair suddenly felt the tide of battle turning. Where once, mere moments before, they had seemed to be surrounded by leering goblin faces, suddenly there were only two left, looking decidedly worried. He lashed out, seizing the advantage, cutting another of the creatures. "At them, men! We have the advantage! Let us finish them here and now!"

Leolamin took a deep breath and looked around the raging battle. There were only two more goblins left.

"Just a little more..." the rakashan mumbled and leaped to the nearest standing goblin. His claws slashed across its face but missed, causing his body to slam onto the deck embarrassingly.

Boris chuckled at the young boy, and then swung his axe at the same goblin.

It did seem like the tide of battle had turned. The captain was right. Kaeryth felt his blood surge and a tide of energy flowed through him. Now it seemed all things were possible, even though just moments before they had seemed dire. He couldn’t even feel his wound anymore. He just felt a hectic vigor driving him forward.

Without even realizing it, he was closing on the nearest goblin. It was if he were possessed somehow, a hand other than his own holding the knife, unseen breezes pulling him along. He angled up, then down, feinting; then he rose upward, slashing the knife through the air. The blade slashed through the goblin’s throat, cutting through flesh deeply.

First, the head fell back. Then the body fell to the floor.

Aboard The Lady SlipperImage Image Image Image
With the pilot lopping off the last remaining goblin's head, the battle was over.

Captain Corsair wiped off his blade on a mostly clean bit of cloth of the nearest goblin and as he said, "Nice work, gents. It was a bit close there for a moment as they threatened to swarm all of us. But I am glad we turned the tide and proud that we are victorious in our first battle to defend our homes."

The other three cheered, "Huzzah, huzzah! Cheers for the Cap'n!" Though, a few of them where a bit shaken there in the final moments of the fight, they still did not break or fall.

Leolamin looked around as the battle ended and the crew started the cheer.

"We won," the rakashan mumbled, sighing in relief. He smiled and felt his shoulders relax.

Boris was nodding and expected the crew to win.

The situation once again under control, Captain Corsair took a deep breath and surveyed the scene of carnage around him.

"Alright men, we'd better head back to town with this lot. We should lash the skiff to Lady Slipper and see if we can tow it back. Push the bodies in the hold of that tub and get them off our deck; the wizards back home can pore over the remains and see if they can learn something about what tribe they belonged to, and if they might pose a bigger threat."

He started shoving the nearest bloody body over the gunwale, determined to clean up Lady Slipper at the earliest opportunity.

Kaeryth panted in the wake of the battle, eyes still wide and knife still clenched in his fist. His eyes darted back and forth, looking for more enemies. But none came out of the woodwork. The only people he saw around them were his own crewmates, who raised their fists and shouted in triumph.

His hand began to shake, but he raised it in the air anyway.

“Huzzah!” he cried with the others.

His first real battle, he thought, and he’d somehow survived. Even now he wasn’t sure of the how or why of it, just that it had happened and he was alive. The entire experience had been exhilarating. He knew he should be grateful, but instead he was disappointed that it was over.

There’ll be another time, he told himself. Maybe even soon.

The captain had given orders to clean up the ship, so he got to work. First he cleaned off his knife, then replaced it in its sheath. Then he grabbed the nearest body by its legs and began to drag it toward the side of the ship. It left a dark streak along the deck that he knew he would have to clean up later.

Returning to TarantonImage Image Image
Boris, Thadeus, and Jakamo started looking through the pockets of the goblins and gathering up anything that might be of value. They made a stack of weapons, all the metal able to be recycled and much of the wood as well. Then they helped pitch the dead goblins overboard for their roughshod burial at sea.

Hooking up a tow rope, the smaller ship could drag their prize back to the city. It would be a useful addition to the defenses and people where any flying boat or ship could serve a purpose, even if it was to be recycled to make a better flying ship.

Image
Some time later the Lady Slipper was back in her berth and others had taken charge of the salvaged skiff and the piled weapons. The Captain left the crew to return to quarters while he left to deliver his report.

The crew all shared a house, because living space was hard to come by in the flying city packed with refugees. Luckily being part of the premier ship’s crew had its perks. The two story house was less than a stone’s throw from the berthing spot. They all shared bedrooms on the second floor, except for the Captain, who had a room to himself on the ground floor. They had a communal living room that also contained a table to dine upon. They had a kitchen as well, but they had to prepare their own meals.

Waiting for them to return was a gnome that was recently assigned to the ship’s crew, but he was way from the house when the alarm had sounded. The Captain had decided they could not wait for Elford to return before they had to leave.

Elford looked up and stopped cleaning his harpoon when he heard the door slam open downstairs, the excited sound of voices filling the common room below. He hopped onto the floor from the bunk he'd been sitting on and went downstairs to meet the others. He had been caught off guard earlier, away from the house, when the goblin skiff had appeared, but trusted that the Captain would not hold it against him - he seemed a fine sort if a bit rough around the edges. The victory bells outside announced a successful engagement despite his absence, so everything appeared to be OK.

"Greetings gents!", he hollered while still halfway down the stairs, "Congratulations! I gather things went swimmingly? Gave those goblins a good run for their money, eh? No permanent damage done? Sorry I was unable to join up; dreadfully bad form, I know, but better luck next time, what? Where's the Captain gone off to? And what's to be done now? Can I help at all?"

He looked at the others, radiating cheerful high-octane eagerness in the face of their fatigued yet relieved expressions after the recent battle.

Leolamin smiled at the gnome, and replied.

"It was quite tough at the end," he shrugged. "But we were able to handle it pretty well."

Boris was in the back, still a little shaky and weary. It didn't go pretty well for him, since he was shaken a lot.

Leo jogged up the stairs without making a sound, and did a short prayer to the gods that protected him during the battle. Doing this is going to be a new routine for him.
