Necessary Evil OOC Area

The villainous resistance of New York City was one of the last to hold out against the alien invasion, so the evil V'sori place Manhattan beneath an unbreakable energy field. Trapped within, the city's toughest and most cunning super villains must battle it out for food, weapons, resources, and dominance - but they are not alone! Can you survive? Can you Breakout?

I think the armored character might be more interesting for me to pursue. So I'll go ahead and do that so you can work on "Captain Cold", or Narissa, and decide which will be better for you.

Hrmm...If P retools Narissa, wonder if I should retool Visara?....though should she be straight melee...with flight i suppose, and some dragonish attacks

I would not say my Necessary Evil version is Narissa from WERE, Herzog. More like the Masters & Mastermind version of her that predates WERE, and the Chameleon powers actually make things different even more. She would only be Narissa in that she is a Winged Woman that is not so nice. That and I might reuse the same avatar… dunno.

Originally, I was looking at some Fear Aura superpowers and I was taking some concept ideas from Tamsin from the TV Show Lost Girl, except the mechanics did not have room for everything I marked in my draft.

I apologize for not posting. I ended up with a massive abscessed tooth. Oral surgery to deal with it, and then pain med cocktail that had me pretty much knocked out for the last week - or at least not in any condition where I could use my computer.

I will get things going in the next few days.

Sorry to hear about the tooth, Unliving. I can relate since I have been making visits to the dentist myself to have fillings redone. Dentists here don’t believe in letting you have more than 30 minutes for a visit, so I have to keep going back for each tooth separately. It has become a Monday ritual after work now for October.

I actually took some time to do up a sheet on Jack “Frost” as well. He would be a ranged attacker and breaking & entering specialist.

I am not sure which one would be better, but I should figure it out in the next day or so.

Well, here is the sheet for the armored character, if it helps you decide at all, PMiller.

http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=987248

I am still tweaking it a bit, I think, but that is the gist of it. I am debating if I should go heavier on the armor up front, or keep the versatility. There were a few other powers I couldn't afford at all, so I narrowed it down to the basics.

I think I will stick with my idea of Jack Frost. I adjusted the sheet to give him more versatility than my original draft too. His gun can shoot cold or fire.

http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=984150

Description: Jack was average height, but had a body like a wrestler. He kept his dark hair short, trimmed close to the scalp but not shaved clean. He had piercing blue eyes that matched his heartless demeanor. He was a greedy person by nature and overconfident in his own abilities, even when facing tough odds.

Background:
Jack was heartless thief and only cared about money. He got into the business because his home-life sucked. He had an abusive father and a mom that took off long ago. Growing up he had to fight for what he wanted, bullying and stealing became a normal occurrence.

He did stay in high school long enough to graduate, recognizing that there was some things he needed to know about mechanics and electronics. He gaffed off most of the other courses, but was smart enough to get by and cheated when he needed to.

Jack became a petty thief at first, but was slowly building his way up to better heists with bigger paydays. He used the money gained to develop his special gun and armor, a necessity when he started attracting attention from those interfering super powered vigilantes.

One good thing about the alien invasion was getting rid of some self-righteous thorns in his side. Unfortunately the K’tharen and their V’sori overlords were even worse for his shady business. He did a stint in prison before the invasion and did not like it. But after, things all around were worse and oppressive. He decided to shift his business model and take things out on the alien occupation and their loyalist cronies.

Oh, this is great, PMiller. He is like Zak grew up and turned to a life of crime. :P

I really like how you tied his story into the setting. Makes perfect sense.

I am waiting a bit to hear more about the Breakout setting before figuring out how to tie in my character's background with what is going on.

Thanks. :)

Here is LMiller's character after I typed up his notes:
--------------------------------------------------------
Alexius Jackson

Image Image

http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=986392

Background:
Alexius’s mother was human. But his father was Atlantean. He didn’t know he was a hybrid until middle school. He lived only with his mother.

Suddenly in his brain, he could sense what his teachers and others around him were thinking. That’s when he started getting curious about his true self. At the end of middle school, an 8th grade bully came and started taunting his friend. He got mad and for some reason the nearest water fountain exploded and the water blasted the 8th grader, making him soaking wet.

That is when he discovered his powers and true self; his mother explained at home. He changed schools because of this.

During an attack, robots were destroying his city. His mother was a journalist, so she was reporting about the super heroes fighting the robots. A super hero picked up a chunk of concrete, threw it at a robot and missed, hitting a bunch of reporters, including his mother instead. She died.

He went to an orphanage, but ran away seeking revenge on the super heroes. As a teenager, he actually managed to kill a young superhero with aquatic powers and was sent to jail. He broke out of jail with the help of a new friend he met inside. Together they intended to seek out and kill heroes to get revenge.

That was until the invasion and his friend was killed. Now he seeks revenge on the alien invaders instead.

Haha, nice! LMiller wrote quite a bit on Alexius' backstory. I like the parallel progressions of his knowledge of his powers and his bitterness and tendency toward villainy. It feels like a nuanced and mature take on the character. It will be interesting to see such a fundamentally nice person as LMiller play someone who is evil, haha.

I have a question about the setting. In the canonical take, the alien ships first arrived in 2001, and it sounds like the war against them went on for approximately 1 year until 2002, after which the world was pretty much conquered and the aliens ruled. The regular Necessary Evil storyline takes place in 2004, with full control of the world in place for 2 years. I assume that the Breakout scenario happens some time before 2004 - but when?

Also, are we going to stick with 2001/2004 as the timeline, or are we going to modernize it to the present day? I ask because it affects what year the characters were born, what events they lived through and what things we can refer to in our backstories. It also affects technology. No one will have a smartphone in 2001 or even 2004, if we figure that the normal course of history is interrupted by the invasion and things progress more slowly after that. If you think about it, the aliens would not want people to be able to use Twitter or other social media to help organize protests, attacks, or even anti-occupation sentiment, so they probably wouldn't allow smartphone technology to be developed and used by humans. However, if this is 2016, then smartphones are already widely in use, and the early days of the resistance would have been organized via social media and the internet, until the aliens could take over the cell companies (or just bomb cell towers into oblivion).

Yeah, LMiller is growing up. 8) He noticed that he has been playing here for years now.

Those are some good points about the changing world with Social Media and this alien invasion. Unliving?

I looked at the original publication date for Necessary Evil. The first edition came out in 2004, which means that the intent of the writers was to write something contemporary that was happening "now", and 2001 was a time that people could easily remember, just having been three years before.

I think keeping the original timeline would affect LMiller the most, as he wasn't born yet, lol! I believe the rest of us are old enough that we can remember the early 00s with reasonable clarity. Yet even if we sub the alien invasion for this setting's equivalent of 9/11 in the real world, there are a ton of things that are part of our culture, history, and everyday lives that happened in the past 15 years that wouldn't necessarily happen in the Necessary Evil timeline. Like the prevalence of smartphones, like I said. But things like character backgrounds including the second Iraq war, or how people use the internet today.

Anyway, it's food for thought. My preference would be to modernize the setting and say "Breakout" occurs in 2016, which would make the initial invasion presumably in 2015. Since Breakout is the prequel, I assume it's post-invasion but before the regular Necessary Evil storyline.
