TSP: Ch. 1 - Into the Silent Planet (IC)

Image Image Image
Far beyond the edge of the inhabited universe lies the Silent Planet, a fertile but isolated world rumoured to be the final resting place for a number of lost interplanetary expeditions. Despite the planet’s deadly reputation, legends of riches, vast resource deposits, and lost alien technology tempt those brave, or foolish, enough to take the risk. Will the Silent Planet’s latest batch of colonists quell its dangerous wildlife and hostile inhabitants, or will they end up as another in a long line of expeditions that have simply ‘gone silent’?

Jaden walked into the Cargo Hold and looked around. He walked the edges and looked at the crates.

“Hmm, I wonder if there’s any spare scrapes of technology in there,” the boy muttered.

Jaden quickly walked back to where his brother was. He hadn’t talked to him for a long time, so he wanted to talk with his older brother.

“So, Delvin, what have you been doing away from home?”

Caitlin was not sure what was normal in terms of shared DNA percentage, but she thought 25% between siblings that had the same parents (as opposed to half siblings) would have more shared DNA than that. She was confused and her brother was still talking in plural... like he was two people?

Then his eyes shifted.

Her mouth sported a frown and she had a confused furrow to her brow. She had many questions now and wondered if she shouldn't get her other two brothers in there to see this.

"Okay, that is strange. Did you get infected or something?"

"What is wrong with your eyes?"

“There is nothing wrong. This is how we are now,” Rian said.

The inky blackness receded, as if draining out the corners of his eyes. Once more his sclera were white, which brown irises and black pupils.

He tried to judge her mood. She had not raised her voice, not recoiled. Her expression was generally negative but not overly so. She seemed more puzzled than anything, he decided, and this was good.

Rian stood where he was, not advancing on her. That could be read as a threat, he knew. He continued to talk in a low, lulling voice.

“There is no infection. Once, Rian Mallory was a single entity. Now we are joined. We are your brother, and we are other. We are Rian Mallory.”

Devlin stopped in his brainstorming of the ambushing as his younger brother asked the question. Rian had not returned with the mirror yet, so there was time to kill.

THe older brother looked to the ceiling as he quickly gathered his thoughts. His time after he left the family freighter was not something he was completely ready to share. The nature of Delvin's work made the man walk a moral tight rope, and as a human, he often partook in acts that would make his family ashamed. It didn't help that a lot was also in the grey as far as legality was concerned. It all put money Delvin's pocket and gave him the needed experience. When word reached him about Rian's attempt to follow him and disappearance, Devlin made it a mission to find his wayward brother. Hoping to save him from some of the hardships himself went through.

In that Devlin failed...as his brother experienced something that changed him.

Now the older Mallory looked at Jaden and wondered how much he should share. His younger brother had grown up a lot, but it was hard to shake the image of the carefree younger brother.

"Odd jobs here and there. Mostly mercenary type of work. Escorting and such."

Best keep it vague Devlin finally settled.

“So it’s the lounge then?” Oleg scratches his chin as Delvin suggests backtracking to deal with the other pirates. “Can’t say I’m thrilled about you shooting that up, but it’ll just be nice to be rid of those pirates.” He snaps his fingers and points at Delvin. “Plus, it could probably use some redecorating. And bullet holes provide a bit of character, yes?”

Image
“I was unaware that the ‘unable to afford repairs’ look had become stylish.”

Image
The captain laughs Svetlana’s comment off. “It’s always been stylish. Couple bullet holes here, a few depleted energy cells there, maybe a nice unexploded ordnance centerpiece. Something that really sends a message.” He turns to Delvin and Jaden. “If it’s not too much to ask, could you space out your shots to create a pleasing pattern of some sort? Maybe something floral?” He waves his hand in the direction of the nearest wall. “Might be a bit easier to aim without two of you stuffed in the maintenance hatch though. It’s a bit cramped in there.”

Oleg shrugs when Jaden wondered aloud about spare technology in the crates. “Probably. Don’t know what’s in most of these. My job’s just to bring them from point A to point B." The captain mimes moving an invisible package left to right.

The captain nods solemnly when Delvin mentions mercenary work. “I’ve considered that type of thing before. Reality is probably less… alluring than most depictions, but still might be better than the monotony of deep space, yes? Same goes for colonist I think.”

Image
Svetlana jumps in. “Perhaps colonist is the wiser choice. I’ve seen your shooting Oleg, you wouldn’t make it as a mercenary.”

Caitlin frowned a bit in consternation. She was still unsure and so far her brother and this other entity that had possessed him were not explaining very well. He eyes were narrowed as she took in those words. Like hell, there is nothing wrong.

She kept her voice low, despite her rising concern, “There was too something going on with your eyes, but it is gone now. They had turned all black.”

“Here, sit down I want to see,” she gestured to a chair as she picked up the little pen light that was part of the toolkit.

Caitlin was no doctor, but had that drive to always be figuring things out or trying to fix them. Her brother being possessed by some parasite was probably going to take expertise she did not have. Maybe her kid brother…

“Jaden! I need your help with something!” she called down the passageway leading to the Cargo Hold.

Rian glanced toward the door, then looked back at Caitlin.

“We do not wish to sit down,” he said, evenly. “What we showed you earlier was of our own volition. We wanted you to understand that we are different now. These differences are physiological as well as psychological.”

He continued to simply stand as he was, arms at his sides.

“Do you understand this?” Now he was not certain. He searched her face, slowly. “We are different. No longer a single entity, but a joined one. But we are still your brother, Rian Mallory.”

Caitlin's face darkened as the being speaking from her brother's body started to be recalcitrant. Instead of reassuring her, he or they were making things worse.

"Like hell you are still my brother! Whoever or whatever you are, you have taken control and possessed him. Let him speak and show me he is still in there!"

"Delvin! Jaden! Get back here now!"

She pointed the pen light like a weapon at the entity claiming to be joined to Rian Mallory. "We just lost our parents! You cannot have my brother too! RELEASE HIM!"

Caitlin had tears streaming down her cheeks as she jabbed him in the chest with her flashlight.

Jaden was going to open the crates to check things inside, but heard his sister shouting his name to come. He looked at Delvin, blinked, and sprinted back to the lounge.

When he got there, something seemed wrong. Why was Caitlin stabbing Rian? With a pen?

“What’s wrong, Caitlin? What do I need to do?”

The boy looked at Rian’s body, confused. Then he looked back at his sister.

Delvin looked at Oleg at the mention of shooting up his lounge.

"Well, we could wait until the remaining pirates make it back to the cargo hold and trap them their. More places to hide for both sides..."

The gunslinger didn't get to finish his thoughts as he heard Caitlin shout for both him and his brother. Jaden took off immediately. Delvin gave a surprised look and followed after his brother.

Back in the passenger cabin, the older brother found his older sister crying. Rian stood their expressionless, and Jaden had a confused looked. Looking at Rian, the Mallory sibling wondered if his brother opened up about his experience and change.

"Whats going on!?"

Delvin took a step towards Caitlin and hesitantly offered a hand for comfort.

Rian did not react when Caitlin jabbed the penlight into his chest, weathering the small impacts without flinching.

“We have not taken anything from you, Caitlin,” he said, more quietly now. “If not for our joining, you never would have seen your brother again.”

Jaden, and then Delvin, ran into the room, looking uncertain and worried. At least no one had drawn a real weapon. He supposed it could have gone that way, even among siblings. But neither brother looked angry or aggressively inclined.

“We are merely having a discussion,” he told them, glancing at them briefly. Then he looked back at Caitlin. “All we are asking for is your acceptance.”

Caitlin's wiped away the tears from one side of her face, but that wasn't stopping them as her other two younger brothers showed up. She still jabbed the pencil sized flashlight into Rian's chest one more time for emphasis as she answered Jaden. "Something is not right with Rian."

"His eyes went black and I wanted your expertise to take a look. I am no expert at things biological. But whatever is possessing our brother is not letting him cooperate so it appears worse than that."

She turned to Delvin as well, "It is not just his eyes, but his whole consciousness is trapped inside. This infection has taken control and steals from Rian's memories to try fooling us into accepting that he is Rian. It keeps talking weird and not explaining. Maybe it is keeping Rian's body alive with this possession, I don't know. But this is not right."

"A discussion that ends with Caitlin in tears," Devlin said with a tint of anger as he stared down Rian. Even with all that has happened in the last few weeks, causing your sister was not one of those things Devlin deemed a wise choice. Despite being away from the family for a number of years, see his older sister cry made him protective of his sibling. And if it was one his brothers that caused it, that could lead to more than words.

But then the older brother remembered that Rian had not been the same when he was reunited with the other Mallory's. The brother must have had his own hardships, and perhaps this was a way for him to cope.

The Mallory looked from Caitlin and to Rian. What his sister was saying was serious, and disturbing. Something Delvin had not thought of before.

"Let me see, " he said gruffly as he walked over to Rian. He took the penlight from Caitlin and shined it into his other brother's eyes.

"What happened to you Rian?"

Delvin expression was a bit dark, and firm.

Jaden thought about what his sister had said. The thing that bothered him the most was that Rian's body was being possessed, and he might not have the right treatment for that.

The the boy said, "Guys, I'm going to take his blood sample and see what's wrong."

"I'm going to get my medical kit."

The boy had a whole briefcase with medical stuff and gadgets.

Rian’s pupil shrunk as the light hit it, like normal pupils do. The sclera was white and the iris brown, like normal. He turned his head and reached up to gently push the hand that held the light aside.

“Please do not shine that light in our eyes,” he said.

He looked at Jaden.

“We also do not consent to a blood test. We are not going to be a lab experiment ever again.”

His tone firmed.

“Nothing is wrong with us. We are changed, yes. But we have not been possessed. We are not an infection. You wish to know what happened to us. We have been attempting to explain, and we will explain further, if you will all listen.”

He looked around at each sibling, turning from Caitlin’s tear-stained face to Delvin’s set mask and unreadable eyes. For his part, Jaden looked worried. Rian’s face was intent, his eyes unblinking.

“We are asking you to listen, so that you understand what happened to us. Will you do this?”
