Devlin had taken his place in the middle of group. It was a good spot for him to be with his musket. He would be able cover both the front and the back while not being overly threatened by melee.

The gunslinger readied himself, double checking his musket and shot. He looked up as Ramses moved off to the side to summon forth this Ammon. After the transformation was complete, the gunslinger had to close his mouth. Instead of the calm Ramses before, there stood an obvious predator, and one not all from this realm.

"Well...that is truly impressive. Glad you are on our side, " Delvin murmured.

But as the summoner or summoned took the lead, Delvin turned his attention back to the entrance of the pyramid. The carved walls depicting various scenes and such were impressive given their age.

"Huh, wonder what the pictures are all about."

The gunslinger made sure to keep pace as they moved forward into the pyramid.

Laria thought it unlikely the entrance of the temple would be trapped or very dangerous. So she had no qualms about moving from the back of the group towards the murals on the wall.

"Okay, let me get closer to see. Someone keep a lookout down that passageway."

"These are depicting Hieracosphinxes, the least intelligent..." she went on to explain what she thought was common knowledge about them.

She used a minor orison to help aid her memory as she considered the hieroglyphs in more detail.

Jaha happily takes up his place amongst the group, keen to be behind folk better armoured than himself. As they enter the complex, he shows an interest in the carvings themselves, trying to work out if there are any djinni or efreeti depicted amongst them. Upon the mention of the hieracosphinxes, he considers carefully whether he knows anything about such beasts.

His smirk widening at Delvin's observation, Ammon says, "Not often someone compliments me. Keep it up and you'll stay on my good side." He waits a moment longer, ensuring that traps are searched for. Then he walks in, no weapons in hand, but his fingers slightly arched at his sides.

The description Laria gives is something Ammon barely pays attention to. "Been there, done that. They're pathetic creatures. Not worth even giving a summary on." He does wait until she is finished before making those remarks, though, at least refraining from interrupting.

Ramses' attention is more on the carvings. "Let's see what those are. I might be able to gather something from them," he instructs Ammon as he moves a bit closer to them.

"Fine, fine." Though he is not as interested, Ammon is not about to go directly against his host. He observes the carvings as Ramses does. He does not know much of them, but his link to Ramses' mind means that he will know what his summoner does.

*Pyramid of The Pharaoh of The Spinxes ~ 4:06 p.m. ~ Starday, Sarenith 21st, 4714 AR*

Jaha does not recall anything extraplanar in nature regarding hieracosphinxes. They appeared to be either obscure or of the world of Golarion naturally. Laria and Ramses know that the pharaoh depicted in the carvings is Sekh-pa-Mefer III, the Pharaoh of Sphinxes. Pharaoh Sekh-pa-Mefer III ruled Osirion during its First Age, some 7,500 years ago.

Called the Pharaoh of Sphinxes, Sekh-pa-Mefer was known to be a friend of the sphinxes of the Osirian desert and hosted many of the enigmatic creatures at his court. During his reign, he claimed that the sphinxes had shared with him the secret of eternal life, and promised that he would return after his death as a god to lead Osirion into a golden age of wisdom and prosperity. After his death, Sekh-pa-Mefer was mummified and interred in a pyramid in the Parched Dunes. But the Pharaoh of Sphinxes never made his promised reappearance, and over the millennia his tomb was buried beneath the ever-shifting sands of the Osirian desert.

Laria is aware that other species of sphinxes attack hieracosphinxes on sight, and the hieracosphinx can pounce upon enemies much like large cats do, ripping them to pieces with their claws and sharp teeth. They live within warm deserts, and they are rumored to live for as long as they wish unless slain, and that the older they grow, the less they need to consume - some only once per century.

Ramses, Damios, and Laria see stone statues depicting winged creatures with leonine bodies and falcons' heads, clearly hieracosphinxes, that sit on either side of the dimly-lit chamber ahead of them.

Laria shared some of the knowledge she knew, "These are carved of the Pharoah Sekh-pa-Mefer the third. He ruled Osirion during the First Age so long ago. The river of time flowed thousands of years..."

When she was done, she moved to the opening so she could see into the next room. She cast a minor orison to aid her abilities slightly and then cast a spell that would allo her to see magical auras.

"I find it slightly odd that hieracosphinxes would be here, actually. The Phaoroh of Sphinxes was a friend to the sphinxes that would attack those creatures on sight so it is unlikely that anyone would honor Sekhpa-Mefer with such statues..."

"Maybe they are not statues," Laria suggested with apprehension.

"Sphinxes...ehh? Didn't know there was more than once kind, " murmurered Delvin.

As they moved past entrance, gunslinger adjusted his grip on his musket. He listed to what Laria had to say about these particular sphinxes. They sounded like dangerous animals, but they bleed just like every thing else. Delvin believed his bullets would still be effective if they had a run in with the mystical beasts.

"Right, I'll keep an eye out, " Delvin nodded at Laria's speculation. That would be something to fight the creatures before they got into the pryamid proper.

The gunslinger followed along and kept his eyes peeled.

*Pyramid of The Pharaoh of The Spinxes ~ 4:06 p.m. ~ Starday, Sarenith 21st, 4714 AR ~ Mid-Round Update*

To the east side of the room ahead of them, Delvin and Laria see stone statues of a regal man holding a crook and flail and wearing a striped cloth headdress which stand on either side of the chamber, though the head of one of the two statues now lies cracked and broken on the alabaster floor. They look just like the carvings of the Pharaoh of Sphinxes. Laria detects no magic coming from the statues and no one of the group sees the statues as being anything other than old stone figures.

Delvin can see a pressure plate up ahead just in front of the entrance to the causeway. It looks like it will trigger a trap - a cascade of falling rocks from the ceiling into the middle of the room. At the same time, he also sees a stone portcullis in the archway just above him, one that would likely drop as well if one stepped on the pressure plate.

spoiler: show
The 10-foot-square area of 2a is where the pressure plate is located. The portcullis is between areas 1 and 2, at the archway Laria and Delvin are standing at. The rocks fall in a 10-by-30 foot area, covering 2a and going east to just where the number 2 ends.

Jaha is quick to grasp the meaning of Laria's observation. "How very interesting - sphinx politics! It might be a useful thing to show no mercy when encountering these particular sphinxes - that way we might profit if we encounter any of the other kind!"

Still intrigued as to whether the statues are real or not, he picks up a handful of sand and prepares to throw it at one of the sphinx statues once he is sufficiently close, when Delvin mentions the trap up ahead. "Ah, a true challenge! Who among us has skills to deal with traps such as this?"

"A challenge indeed. I believe I may try my hand at this, I had dealt with similar misfortunes in the past." Damios leans his spear against the wall and crouches a foot or so away from the pressure place. He takes a moment to consider the devices working and come up with a plan to disable it. Turning to his comrades he says in good spirits, "It would be a shame to make it all this way only to have rocks fall and us all die." He was curious though. . . There did not appear to be rubble anywhere on the ground, so the trap must never have been triggered, or something was around to reset and clear the space.

Then he reaches out with his hands and sets to work.

*Pyramid of The Pharaoh of The Spinxes ~ 4:06 p.m. ~ Starday, Sarenith 21st, 4714 AR ~ Mid-Round Update #2*

Damios walks towards the pressure plates, examining them and attempting to disarm them. His first attempt makes his heart race as he does not manage to keep the pressure plate from jamming, narrowly avoiding it being pushed in carelessly, but upon the second attempt he re-examines the pressure plates. Keeping himself from panicking, he disarms the pressure plate by tilting and jamming the device itself. It should be now safe to proceed.

Disarming that was 2 full-round actions and approaching was 1 round, I will track that with next update. Each PC gains 550 experience points for disarming the falling stones + falling portcullis trap.

Postby Laria Mavern » Tue Dec 09, 2014 1:22 am

Laria had not considered a mechanical trap herself, thinking of the disparity of the wrong kind of sphinx sculptured to guard the entrance to the pyramid. Even after Damios dealt with the falling rock and portcullis traps, she was still concerned about the statues being false.

“That was good work, Damios. Lucky we are observant instead of thinking we are losing time over the river bed as we are cautious.”

“There were no magical auras around, but that might not mean anything.”

“An ancient hieracosphinx might not need to feed for a century. So a creature that can go without nourishment for so long could very well stand still like a statue for decades or longer, yes?”

“Hmmm, let me try a stone.”

Laria put away her javelins and loaded up a stone in her sling. She whirled it around and flung the rock at the statue on the left.

Ramses immediately recognizes the Pharaoh from the history his family had taught him. The information is channeled to Ammon, who responds to Laria's description with a small snort. ""The river of time?" Just say 7500 years. Much simpler and easier to understand that way."

"Ammon," Ramses says to him warningly. He has no desire to start a conflict with any of his comrades.

With a soft grumble at Ramses' response, Ammon says out loud, "Anyway, my host speaks Sphinx, so if we come across any letters in that language, let him take a look." He does not think the information will be that useful, but the empathetic link he has with Ramses is enough for him to know his summoner wants him to share that.

The statues are ignored by Ammon, but he gives a slight nod at hearing of the trap. "And this is why I didn't rush ahead," he says pointedly. But when Damios disables it, he does say, "Not bad," even if it is a bit begrudgingly. He raises an eyebrow at Laria attacking the statue, but any snide remarks about it are cut off by another jolt of disapproval from Ramses. Ammon instead stands back and watches.

Damios rises, taking his spear in hand once again. "That makes one trap overcome." He smiles, pleased with himself, and watches casually as the stone flies from Laria's sling. The plate would be safe to stand on, but he did not want to venture forth until Laria had deemed it safe. It would not be wise to appear foolish by blindly walking into whatever lay after.

"It does bode well I suppose... ... No need to guard the Pyramid if nothing of value remained."

Delvin was glad that had some one among them with the skill to disable the trapped pressure plate. The gunslinger counted himself lucky to have notice the odd looking tile sticking up high than the rest. Tripping the trap would have been a disastrous start to this adventure.

“Good Job!”

“Aye, exactly, " Delvin agreed with Damios. "Must be some good treasure or something inside if there are traps just inside the front door. I guess that makes us the first to enter since it is likely others would have triggered the trap or there would have been signs of it being disabled.”

Devlin kept his place in the group, prepared to cover them with his musket. He watched as Laria tossed a stone at the sphinx statue.

To Ammon or Ramses, Delvin joked. “Well, since you understand Sphinx. Maybe you can insult it’s mother. In case it is not a statue.”
