Episode I: THE TRAITOR’S GAMBIT

It is a dark time in the galaxy. The evil Galactic Empire has spread
from the Deep Core to the Outer Rim, and everywhere
the Empire’s tyranny can be felt.

Fleeing from the oppression of the Emperor’s minions, agents of
Senator Bail Organa have run to a remote space station above
Brentaal. Known to be a vocal opponent of the Empire,
Organa may be the last hope of freedom in the galaxy.

In the hopes of stopping these dissidents before they can
reach the Senator, the Empire has alerted its forces on
Sel Zonn Station, where the struggle for liberty rages on,
and the first sparks of rebellion have begun to burn. . . .

** Aboard a C-3 Passenger Liner, on approach to Sel Zonn Station, Brentaal System **

J'hera Zed and Jacen Onyx have been traveling in a shared cabin, spending most of their time behind the closed door, aboard a C-3 Class Passenger Liner. The two caught passage at the industrial world of Druckenwell heading Core-bound on the Corellian Run, changing to the Hydian Way, and planning to switch transports at Brentaal heading towards the outer rim again on the Perlemian Trade Route.

With the current situation in the Galaxy, the two young Force Users are thinking that most beings associated with the hunted Jedi Order, running from the Empire, would be using more inconspicuous means to head towards the Outer Rim. By traveling in the opposite direction they are not expecting anyone to find them on a passenger liner in the Core Worlds, if they even knew their identities in the first place.

The latest announcement, informs them of arrival at Sel Zonn, a XQ2 Platform Station orbiting Brentaal IV for transfer. Docking is expected to be completed in about 10 minutes and they can disembark a few minutes later.

It had been a turbulent ride for Jacen. The flight itself was fine and the pilot crew did an adequate job of bringing them to Brentaal. It was the inner turmoil that was the problem.

The last few months have been a whirlwind. Life as Jacen knew it was completely different. 6 months ago, he was fighting the Seperatist Army with his Master and they were regarded as heroes of freedom. Now, his master was dead and the Jedi Order may not even exist anymore. Jacen imagined that he was not the only survivor, and, when he came across J'hera Zed, he was relieved. Jacen and J'hera were acquaintances, but the bond they now share will be life-long and last forever. Only another Jedi could possibly understand the pain they went through, but all Jedi are outlaws now. Even if they came across another, they probably wouldn't know it because they'd be trying to hide too.

Jacen traveled light. He had a few spare outfits, but other than that, he had only his lightsaber, which he now had to hide. It used to be a badge of honor, a symbol of authority and justice. But now it was something that branded him a traitor to the new Galactic Empire. He tucked his lightsaber in the concealed holster located at the small of his back on his utility belt and donned his poncho, covering everything from his shoulders to halfway down his thighs.

"J'hera, you just about ready to go?" he asked with a dull, flat tone to his voice. He looked around their cabin trying to see if there was anything he could do for his new best friend.

The tiny creature, 40cm of brownish fuzzy fur, looks back up at Jacen while standing on the seat in their compartment, his little black orbs for eyes unblinking and whiskers twitching slightly. J'hera Zed would have been lost in the second bed and chose to make a nest in the curved chair that was near the holo-vid screen.

The little being had been fascinated at times by what passed for entertainment aboard the star liner. Most of the time he had enjoyed the more animated cartoonish vid programs that involved other unique looking beings squashing each other with overly large mallets, speeders and other heavy objects. It helped leave his mind free to relax in the relative safety of their transport when between systems. All to soon the vacation would be over.

"J'hera Zed will be ready soon." The voice is a bit squeaky in accent.

He leaps from the chair to open a small compartment closest to the floor. He bends over, bushy tail in the air partially obscuring the view as he half crawls inside to begin removing his gear. With only his lower half still visible, he starts pulling out his belongings and pushing it out behind him.

The pouch on the bandolier with his sling ammunition comes open and a few of the metal bullets escape. His tiny backpack follows tossed a little ways behind him and pops open. A spherical grenade spills out and rolls across the floor to clunk against the bulkhead on the opposite side of the compartment. Still half inside the storage compartment, J'hera Zed looks down his belly from underneath to spot the errant object just visible across the room between his two hind legs. "Er?"

"I got it," said Jacen as he walked over to the grenade and picked it up. He looked at it for a moment and could immediately identify it as a stun grenade. He had seen many during the Clone Wars.

Jacen walked over to J'hera and squatted down on one knee, handing the grenade back to his little brown friend, "You might want to be a little more careful there. We wouldn't want anyone searching us because a stun grenade went off because it fell out of your pack." Jacen's tone was lighter than it had been almost all trip. In fact, he was grinning as he spoke.

With his bandolier and backpack already tossed out of the storage compartment, J'hera Zed grabs the camouflage cloak.

Backing out of the cubby hole, he turns and straightens, letting the cloak fall to the floor in a pile at his feet as he picks up the backpack holding it open. His whiskers twitch. "J'hera Zed has license for it." The grenade lifts from Jacen's hand and sails back into the pack. J'hera Zed zips the seal closed and sets it at his feet.

"The baubles should behave." As he looks at the rest of his mess, his whiskers twitch and the metal bullets start finding their way back into the pouch. Snapping it closed, he fastens the bandolier across his chest and checks the false toolkit bag. His precious possession is safely tucked away.

Picking the miniature backpack up once again, J'hera slips his arms through the straps and settles it into place.

Finally picking up his cloak once again, he reverses it to deck-plate gray to help blend in for urban environments. Tossing it around his shoulders, he leaps back up onto the chair to sit on his haunches. He steals a glance at the holo vid player.

"J'hera Zed and Jacen must wait to get off transport?"

"That's right, little buddy," replied Jacen, "It looks like we dock in about 10 minutes and can leave afterwards."

"If you want to watch another cartoon, I don't see why not. As long as your packed and ready, we should be fine."

Jacen went over to the fresher and poured himself a glass of water from the tap. He sat down on the couch and anticipated J'hera turning on the holo-vid. It was as reasonable way to pass the time as he could think of.

Jacen found his mind wandering to Dayna. The last time they spoke was when they broke up. He wanted to contact her so badly and see if she was ok, but he didn't want to endanger either of their lives. He was sure the Empire was thorough and would scope out places where Jedi were stationed. See if they can catch someone trying to contact an old friend.

J'hera Zed twitched his nose, a gesture that Jacen has found to mean the same as a human shaking their head. The tiny being had watched enough vid programs to learn a few things, but nothing more could be gleaned from the programming in such a short while. Besides, the rock-like beast continually keeps flattening the slug-like creature, yet every time, the slug returns to normal shape. The trials of combat appear to be ineffective.

He remains sitting and contemplates the finer points of using blasters on creatures that will not die, even after a hole is made through them. The ways of the Force are mysterious.

Once Jacen has taken some water refreshment, J'hera Zed looks up and asks, "J'hera Zed suggests a game of Lightsaber, Thermal Detonator, Sith Lord to pass the time." Jacen is unsure where exactly the tiny being picked up such a game, but he's is fairly certain the little guy will try to cheat as always. J'hera's hands are small and he has practiced subtle changes at the last minute to react his opponent's selection, a trick he must have picked up from the deck urchins that played the game with him on Nar Shaddaa just outside the cantina.

OOC: This is a version of Rock, Paper, Scissors. Except the gesture for scissors is replaced with just a single finger to represent a lightsaber of the Jedi. The Jedi beats the Sith Lord cutting him down. The Sith Lord uses the Force zap the Thermal Detonator as distance. The Thermal Detonator explodes when the Jedi tries to use his lightsaber on it.

Jacen's eyebrow raised in speculation, "All right, but don't you go reading my mind again. It's just not fair."

Jacen leaned over towards J'hera and balled up his right hand and placed it his open left, "Ready?" he asked the furry brown Jedi.

"One... two... three... go," said Jacen as he held out his hand. It was still balled up to show thermal detonator.

A slight indignant twitch of his whiskers, the tiny being replies with his hand also displaying a fist after the count, "J'hera Zed does not read minds. Though his feelings say Jacen will win more often... this time."

After several rounds and more than a few draws, Jacen is leading 8 to 7 counting a few of J'hera Zed's belated throws from fist to lightsaber to beat Jacen's Sith Lord. The little creature is good and quick at it, requiring all of Jacen's Perception to catch it.

This is not the first time Jacen has encountered the questionable morals of the furry being. Something in J'hera's racial instincts always leads him to take a meter whenever offered a centimeter and he doesn't believe in a sense of fair play. Probably because he is so short among much taller beings.

Though, his heart is not malicious in the intent.

"Alright JZ... if you say so," replied Jacen coyly.

The truth was that Jacen needed J'hera to pull him out of his shell right now, and, this silly game managed to do that. If they weren't playing, Jacen would most likely be using the Force to look after Dayna, something he had done only once or twice before. Using the Force for such things was truly trivial in the bigger picture and it would probably only serve to increase his already strong attachment to her.

Jacen got his hands set as he counted out again, "One... two... three... go!"

Jacen held out his hand flat to represent Sith Lord. He was hoping J'hera would anticipate him going for another Thermal Detonator.

The tiny being looks at up Jacen a moment, his voice is flat, but still squeaky as he reminds the man, "J'hera Zed." Being a very short creature, he always refers to himself by his full name not wanting that short as well.

Continuing the game, J'hera Zed brings his fist down into his palm, a finger popping out a fraction of a second later. Jacen picks up on the very slight delay this time, but the tiny being tries to look innocently up at the older man.

Seeing Jacen not buying it, the whiskers twitch and J'hera Zed says, "Okay, Jacen wins that one." On that note, the game is finished with the human winning over all as predicted.

Jacen found J'hera's spunk to be refreshing. Jacen was sure that he would call J'hera by different nicknames without really realizing it. It's good for some friendly banter between friends.

"Everything has transpired precisely as you have foreseen, J'hera Zed," chuckled Jacen as he emphasized J'hera's full name.

Jacen stood up and stretched. His hands reached the ceiling. Jacen was not the tallest human you'd ever meet but he typically was the tallest one in the room.

"I suppose we should get going. The wonders of Sel Zonn Station await us, my friend."

J'hera Zed is waiting patiently, sensing the older man is ready to disembark.

"No announcement of ship docked has been made. Jacen wants to stand in line at the exit ramp?"

The tiny creature's whiskers twitch with curiosity, wondering what Jacen wishes to do. They have only managed to spend 5 minutes getting ready to go and playing a game.

He asks, "J'hera Zed is wondering where on station to go first. He has never been there before."

Jacen shrugged, "I guess so. Unless you have another idea on how to spend the time."

Jacen looked back down at J'hera. J'hera looked calmer than Jacen was. Jacen didn't look nervous, but he also didn't look relaxed. He hated being late for things and this new lifestyle didn't help his general stress level.

"I've never been here before either. Maybe we should get something to eat when we arrive. If there's a cantina, we might be able to overhear some local or even galactic news."
