WS: Caravan Evenings [IC]

Postby PMiller » Fri Jan 17, 2014 6:15 am

The Caravan’s Evenings in CheliaxThe trade road’s dirt and flattened gravel road caused enough noise that holding conversations during the day was difficult. Particularly as you focused on being vigilant as you rode escort.

The evenings were one of the few times you can gather as a group and get to know one another as you share an evening meal before resuming a watch schedule to the night.

Image
You make a campsite just off the trade road. The horses were unhitched and picketed off to the side and you pitch the tents opposite the carriage around the campfire.

Finally ready to settle in for the night, everyone was sitting around the campfire eating the evening meal. The sun has dropped below the trees and dusk was fast approaching.

Kriger sat cross legged on a spot in the ground near the campfire. The blond haired man wore a simple blue stripped tunic and paints as he used the campfire light to inspect his chainshirt for any nicks or broke links. It was a habit his father had instilled on him on their many journeys through the woods. Always check your equipment. A weakened or loose strap could break when you least expect it, especially in a fight, and leave you dead. The barbarian's father was always sober and pragmatic. But he had to be considering he dealt with people questionably on the wrong side of the law. And thus Kriger checked his armor and weapons on a regular basis.

He glanced up, taking a slight break, and stretched his neck. He glanced around at the others as they are scattered about the fire.

"It's quiet here. Any one have a tale or story to tell?"

Sitting on a log a little way away from the campfire, Garm is gazing at the stars when Kriger speaks. "Amazing, are they not? One of the few things I really missed when I went on my wanderings in the World Below were the stars. Although I did once find a giant cave, its ceiling covered in small creatures that made their own lights, a little like the stars." He smiles contentedly at the memory. "Truth be told, I have tended to spend most of my time down Below for some years now, until this trip. It is an interesting change! "

Shavuana is picking through the small bags of herbs that were mixed in with the groups food stores. While not many, she did pick out a few that she thought might accentuate the evening's meal. She made her way over to the fire and the small cauldron-like pot bubbling away and sprinkled a few of the herbs within and stirred with the large wooden spoon. She peered over to Kriger, "I am sure I could recite one of the many stories that I have read from books, but them seem to match with real adventures. Thus lacking in their authenticity."

she gave the pot another stir as Garn mentioned the Underdark and she listened to the dwarf's words. "Living miles and miles under the earth seems soooo alien, yet so intriguing." The teifling does start to ask the dwarf an array of questions about the other races he had encountered, flora and fauna and all in between.

"Aye be havin some experience spelunking around as a wee bit younger lad. Not tha' I be old by any means." Frakas chimes in as he settles down by the fire. Sonja not far behind crreps up and lays close but not too close to the heat source.
"But ta be honest there not be many stories ta tell of battles or anything exciting such as that. Mostly getting nearly stuck an seeing some uh the things yee don't be seeing up 'ere on tha topside."

Kriger leaned back on his arms as the others responded. It was times like this when one really learned to know who he travelled with. The barbarian watched the tiefling prepared dinner with some mild curiosity as she sprinkled in some spices and herbs. In his own travels, on his own and with his father, it was always simple fair.

"Aye, I mean in general, not necessarily your own tales of valor. Though those would be welcome."

Kriger glanced at Garm. "So Garm, how do you tell when it's day and when it's night underground?" The questioned always intrigued the barbarian. His foray into the sewers beneath Thessia had not been long enough to really tell on that matter.

Garm thinks about Kriger's question for a moment. "Everyone seems to respond differently when they enter the World Below," he eventually says.

"Some folk just carry on as before, waking and sleeping without trouble. Others never seem to get used to it. Usually when there are several of us, we arrive at some kind of consensus as to when it is time to awaken, and when it is time to rest. I tend to notice because of my daily routine of prayer and spell preparation, but others without such rhythms might lose their sense of time altogether. Things in the World Below can remain the same for a very long time, and then change completely in mere moments. The trick is to pick up on the subtle hints that something is shifting, and get out of the way."

Responding to Shavauna, he says: "I have, in truth, not yet been very deep, as such things are measured. It can sometimes be dangerous, but there are also places of unrivalled beauty. It is in such places I feel the presence of Torag most strongly, even if they are often remote and empty."

Randarin sat down on the ground near Garm. He liked the dwarf's story about the underground city.

The archer asked Garm questions after everyone else. "Garm, how do you get food?"

"Why is it dangerous?"
Randarin asked.

Garm taps the side of his nose knowingly upon Randarin's question: "There are edible things aplenty in the deeps, if you have the knowing of it, and if you are lucky! And assuming you have the stomach for it, of course. Which is why I tend to carry some salt and spices with me when I go - it can help make certain things more edible, even if they have more legs than is generally thought suitable... But I do also generally carry some rations with me, just in case."

"Good food can be difficult to come by, and travellers in the World Below must also always be on the lookout for water that is drinkable. In some places water is very scarce, and what exists can be heavily guarded by goblins or worse things. In others, water flows in raging rivers that will sweep the unwary to their doom in the depths. And in yet others, the water can be poison to drink. But such things exist in the Surface World as well."

"I really don't mean to make the World Below sound worse than it is; it is merely different, and it will kill those who do not respect it and heed its warnings."

"Aye you be capturing the truth of it in them words you spoke Garm. I seen much a what you described in the world below. It not be fer everyone but it is magical in it's own way."
His comments bring back recent memories of travels underground when he was just a boy. "It be like places up 'ere effen you ain't prepared you could become dead real quick."

Neffar had brought food to both the nursemaid and the boy prince as they sat apart from the Wayfarers. He spoke to them in hushed words, but his tone and body language were clipped and curt. The boy protested or whined, but the dragoon was adamant and hissed a comment to the nursemaid. She quietly consoled the boy as Neffar joined you.

He sat down around the fire and listened to the stories for awhile.

"In my homelands, the dwarven folk are not so common amongst the desert."

"However, there be some dwarven lands in the south, under the mountains. There be trade, yeah. So they buy food for their mined gems."

Garm is delighted to discover a fellow enthusiast for the Underworld in the party, and presses Frakas for further details of his journeys in an attempt to compare experiences.

When Neffar speaks about dwarven lands far to the south of the desert, this also captures his interest. "And have you dealt with these dwarves yourself, Master Neffar? I confess I know almost nothing of their lands. It would be wonderful indeed to be able to visit them!" He chooses to ignore the recurring curt treatment of the princeling.

The tiefling gives the large pot another stir before looking up, "Not my best work, but it is what we have. Bowls please."

As she dishes out food she comments, "I am sure there are many wonders all over, above and below. In the lives of adventurers, we hopefully get to see some if them."

She gets her own bowl of dinner and starts to eat looking to the others as she does.

Kriger picked up his chainshirt and went back to checking it over as Garm explained more of the Underworld. The barbarian listened aptly, and wondered about the marvels and hazards of the dwarven world. It did not seem all that different than surviving in the woods. Just a different set of rules. Know them and you stand a good chance to stay alive. Ignore them and you could end up dead.

Kriger looked up as he watched Neffar chasten the boy, and then join the rest of them at the fire. The guard joined the conversation, but the blond haired man wondered at the harshness at the boy. Perhaps Neffar did not want them to ‘spoil’ the boy with stories. Kriger was not sure he should say anything.

“Hey Neffar, not to speak out of place, but it’s no harm if the boy joins us. Heck, might learn a thing or two.” Kriger said softly to the guard.

Kriger then returned to the conversation. “So are these dwarves rich if they are mining gems? Are all dwarves like that?” Kriger didn’t think Garm looked all that rich. The dwarf was well equipped, but he wasn’t carting around bags of gems or gold.

The barbarian set aside his chainmail shirt and got up to get his mess kit. With bowl in hand, he spooned himself out some of the meal Shavauna made. "Better than rations, that's for sure."

Neffar glanced at the blonde warrior and shook his head, “Tis such learning that I am protecting him from, yeah. The boy cannot be picked up the ways of men and women warriors and wizards. His education is not what my lord charged us with.”

“The nursemaid has him in hand and he was not supposed to be traveling across Cheliax this way and seeing death or monsters. He need not be looked to become a hero and kilt either, yeah.”

Changing the subject he answered Garm, “I have not been to the dwarven lands in Thuvia myself, yeah. But their wares be sold in the markets.”
