Randarin followed them to the inn and met the soldier.

He wants to ask the questions, but other members already asked them. The elven archer nods in agreement when Kriger and Shavauna asked theirs.

Randarin introduced himself to Neffar, "Um, hi I'm Randarin, the elven archer. Pleased to meet you."

"I hope we'll have a nice journey."

The archer wants to meet the boy too, but he can't see him so he decides not to ask the soldier about him yet.

Randarin waits for Neffar to reply.

The man in the turban nods to acknowledge each of you in turn as you introduce yourselves.

In his thick accent he replies, "Yeah, I be hiring the Wayfinder's Society to provide some good guides and capable warriors to aid us. No simple mercenaries. We be needing better than that, yeah."

"We had eight o' us in the Prince's escort when we be left home. When be stay in Magnimar, two o' the men died. One died in his sleep, Korriss. Just not wake up. Very strange."

"Jalell got himself trample by runaway carriage. Skull crushed by hoof. Ill luck, yeah."

"So we be six when we be left Magnimar aboard Wind Rider, merchant ship. Our Captain in charge o' us, died from seas sickness. Turn so green he puked his stomach out and bled from his eyes. Never seen such o' thing. Ship's surgeon made us throw him overboard. Then we be lost Barrabi in the storm. Wave took him over the side in the night. Four o' us be left then."

"One week before we reach Theissia, Kartool took ill too. Ran fever and was so hot we could cook egg on his forehead, yeah. Ship surgeon tried to help him, but his brain just cooked and he died in two days. Nobody else be got sick, yeah. Don't know what happen to cause him sick."

"We reach this port with three o' us, yeah. So Zephyr goes ashore on the gangplank and slips. Falls down between ship side and pier. Squashed flat and then drowned before we be get to him with rope. Wind Rider be worse lucky ship o' Golarion. We try to pay fare and move to inn. Ship Captain return our money, after be felt sorry for us."

"We stay four nights here and be asked around for hiring some new escorts. But, last night Portunades was be sit in dockside tavern and fight breaks out at next table. The fighters crash into his table and big mess o' pile o' people, yeah. Fight be kept going and a minute later I arrive to help him. But a knife wound in side had killed him. The brawlers were removed from tavern by then, but the bloody knife was be same from Portunades's belt, yeah. Killed by his own knife."

Neffar sighs heavily, clearly distraught at losing men he trusted and was probably friends with.

"Now, I have to be getting the Prince home. No Captain. No men. Just me, yeah."

"Arrgg tha' be some of tha worst luck, effen it is even luck I be 'earing about." Frakas says with a look of revulsion after hearing all the disastrous events that befell the man.

"Ye say one of yer boys was puking up his stomach an another died of a fever? One be thinking it was disease but that don't be explaining the other deaths, an one be dying with his own knife stuck in 'em. This be strange happenings indeed."

To continue where Frakus left off first offering her condolences, "I am sorry for your losses Neffar Nefta."

She then continues, "Several seemingly unconnected events having such dire consequences, hard to prove it was anything but coincidence. I still have strong doubts that someone or something is not behind it of course, but we," the Tiefling motions to herself and her companions, "We will do our best to provide your charge with protection. Are there any special requirements that we should be made aware of?"

Postby Kriger » Mon Dec 02, 2013 6:25 pm

Kriger listened to the last guardsman tale with growing suspicion. To the barbarian, the guard was in the clear. He also thought the man was courage for sticking with his charge throughout all the mysterious deaths. That was some loyalty to the boy.

“Sounds like some one pissed off the gods.” Kriger commented at the end of the tale. He was not kidding in the slight.

“What can you tell us about your charge? Anything unusual with the family? Any family curses and the like? And like the my lady comrade here had said, any special requirements?”

The deaths of the remaining escorts seemed too coincidental to be accidents. And likewise, they seemed too random to be foul play. Which to the suspicious barbarian left supernatural means. Now the question was who or what.

Kelvin listens quietly as the man recounts the tale of how his fellow guardsmen died, and stands quietly for a while, idly stroking his chin in thought

Not quite intending to be heard, but forgetting to keep himself from uttering his thoughts aloud, he voices a couple of them, "Hmm... a few of those deaths could have been exotic poisons, perhaps, and a deft hand in a crowd could stab a man with his own knife during a commotion. A few of these sound like they could feasibly be the work of a particularly subtle assassin, one intent on following along and making things seem accidental. I am loathe to rely on an assumption of ill luck being a sufficient explanation..."

Neffar nods sadly as you share aloud some of his concerns, "Poison and assassins has occurred to me, yeah. But, I cannot prove any it and can only guess. Yet, I witnessed some o' the accidents and cannot see how an assassin could have arranged them either."

He looks to Kriger and continues circumspectly, "In Thuvia there are... rivals of the Patron of Merab, the Prince's father. Yet we are abroad and no attempt to harm Leonedes has been made, yeah."

"Surely, someone has angered a god to cause such ill fortune, but no reason that I know of has brought this upon us. Certainly no family curses."

Neffar turns to the diminutive woman and bows his head slightly. "We appreciate your pledge."

"Though, I am not sure what you mean by special requirements, yeah. Our plan is to travel nondescriptly overland to Westcrown and book passage on a Thuvian ship from there. We wish to leave tomorrow morning, yeah. Chairman Jacobson has sent you to be escorts."

"I think we should spend a night at this inn because then we don't have to come back here again, " he says.

"Where is Thuvia? Is it a long ship ride?" the archer asked.

The archer has never been to Thuvia.

If Randarin has to go, he doesn't want to get sea sick!

"And so shall it be", Garm answers the guard, struck by his loyalty in the face of ever-increasing odds. "As Shavauna says, we will do our utmost to safely escort you and your charges to your destination. We are not altogether helpless ourselves and, Torag willing, we shall yet discover the cause of these "accidents", and deal with it accordingly. In terms of requirements, can we assume that you will continue to take responsibility for the prince's immediate safety, while we provide additional protection in a variety of ways? But what can you tell us about the prince's nursemaid? To put it bluntly, do you trust her?" He does not believe in diplomatic niceties but favours the direct approach.

Kriger felt pity for the remaining guard. The guardsman did not strike the barbarian as arrogant and commandeering. So hopefully, the blond haired man and his companions should be able to easily work with him. After all, it just seemed like the guard was trying to get him and his boy home alive.

Kriger tilted his head towards Randarin.

“My friend, that is a good idea. That way, we can immediately begin our job of protection.”

The barbarian glances at the others, checking for any objections. He then turned to the guard, “We just have some provisioning to take care of first. But I don’t see any reason we cannot stay here tonight.”

Kriger then glances as Garm asked about the nursemaid. The blond haired man nodded, and looked for to the guard to see his answer.

“Perhaps we should interview her ourselves as well?”

“Can you go into more detail about these rivals? Perhaps they have the ability to send aflictions and such from a far.”

Neffar's demeanor shifts slightly when you ask about the nursemaid. His tone is not so agreeable, "She be a woman and been with the Prince for years. Why she be harming the him or my comrades? She be upstairs doing her duty, so can meet her on the morrow, yeah. She not know much."

"Thuvia be a few weeks by ship from Westcrown, yeah. I no talk about politics, I just be simple guard in the Prince's service."

Neffar agrees with the idea of you spending the night at the same inn if you so desired. When you talk about provisioning, he speaks up, "We done purchased a plain carriage and a team of four horses. I be having to drive it... unless one of you be doing so, yeah. There is plenty o' room for my prince and the woman inside. Our luggage will fit inside and some on the roof, yeah."

"There be enough room to store additional food and water, if necessary. But I be expecting to resupply and stay at some inns along the way."

"You can be seeing the carriage if you want, yeah."

Frakas hooks his thumbs on his belt and nods to Kriger. "Staying the night be a good idea ta me."

This human was right up the Gnomes alley, no nonsense and not one for running his mouth on stuff he doesn't have knowledge of.

Frakas is a little worried about this adventure and no quite sure how it would play out. An unseen foe, if there is a foe or just strangely bad luck. How does one fight the unseen? He wonders.

"I can be handling the horses in a pinch effen needs be." Frakas tells the heavily accented human with a wink.

"Very well", Garm agrees, "I meant no disrespect, Master Neffar, but we need to eliminate all options. Staying here this evening seems most sensible. I have some small healing skills and am at your service if needed, though Torag willing, we will not need to deal with much more than bruises and saddle-sore muscles!"

"As to my query on requirements, I know sometimes that there are differences in cultures. And with your explanation to my companions of how you wish to proceed to Westcrown, I believe we have what we need as to your expectations." the small tiefling says.

"Thank you Neffar Nefta. We should see to our preparations and the purchasing mounts of our own to help speed the journey along." She says to man. "If we have anything further to ask or discuss we will be along later in the day as it appears we are staying the night as well." She gives a respectful nod to the man, and then hops down from her chair.

She looks to the others before leaving the table to see if they have anything to add. If not, she makes arrangements to stay at the inn for the night before departing to be sure that something will be reserved and then leaves the inn.

After accepting Garm's explanation with a smile, Neffar returns the small woman's farewell, "Sounds good, yeah."

"Frakas, I am a dragoon by training. I am good with handling the horses themselves. If you do have experience driving a wagon then I am more comfortable being mounted, yeah."
His expression looks inquisitive as he looks back the gnome.
