Grp A: Darwell's Tower [IC]

Postby Anguis » Sat Nov 23, 2013 4:27 pm

A request had been received from a near by cleric, Darwell Umbruskor, to protect a wagon full of various articles acquired at auction in Callenburg. The auction was of the remaining estate belonging to an old wizard who finally passed away. Darwell's tower is about a half days ride away, near a relatively prosperous fort town.

Darwell Umbruskor has long been known in the area as an eccentric but ultimately harmless old sage. From what you've heard, he keeps odd hours, rarely speaks a word to anyone, and lets no one enter his tower save for a few servants. It was one of these servants, the maid Estella, who submitted the request to the Adventurers Guild. A payment of 800gp was split with 400gp provided up front and the remainder to be paid upon delivery.

The old man will be off on business and has hired some of the fort town guard to watch his tower in his absence. The guard were notified of the delivery, and Darwell will return within a few days of it being delivered. The loaded wagon is being held at the constables office for safe keeping, with mule and driver awaiting arrival of escort to depart.

You start at the Adventurers Guild. This task has been assigned to Raddick, Ryllian, Xan Chow, and Kailus. You are brought together and described the job.

Raddick is sitting with Xan as he listened to the proposal.

They have been asked to take on the mission, but he is not familiar with the other two at the table. Slyph, T'sarich, and Seb had left city after a few days of hanging around. So he and the pot-bellied monk had remained in the Adventurer's Guild awaiting work. Raddick sold off the armor and some other items, preferring to travel lighter and take advantage of his new appreciation for stealth and outdoorsmanship. He sold Fido to a good lad that needed a loyal dog to be a stalwart companion. The scout jsut was not comfortable talking the dog into danger and seeing Fido badly injured all of the time.

He looks to the others at the table, really only knowing their names, and asks the elves, "It sounds simple enough. I move pretty quickly, so I do not need the use of a horse. What about you two?"

"I agree, the task seems simple. My good friend Slyph told me I could trust in you lot and I do not take her word lightly. I look forward to seeing where this road takes us."

Ryllina nods at Raddick and Xan in turn, and then looks to Kailus who she offers a crooked smile.

"Long have I been away from the company of elves brother, greetings."

To Raddick she says "I do not require a horse if we are to follow a cart laden with goods, better my feet on the ground."

Kailus glanced at Ryllian with some trepidation until she mentioned that she has been long absent from the elven homeland. There was no way that his brother could have already sent his spies this far.

He smiled - a little awkwardly at first.

"Greeting." he nodded nobly and lowered his voice so that only she could hear, "I am recently parted from elven company, and the scars are deep. I was not at all looking forward to life among these... humans. Your presence would make the journey more bearable."

He turned to Raddick and Xan assessing the humans with a sigh. He would have to get used to living among these... creatures. It was a testament to how far he had fallen that he would have to live among them doing menial tasks for human coin. Not for the first time he pondered the decisions that lead him here.

"I plan on purchasing a horse before we leave." he stated, refusing to walk the journey, no matter the cost, or his inexperience at riding. "Perhaps one of you might know a trustworthy stabler?"

Xan bows his head to the others low enough to almost touch the table top, his topknot braid slips over his shoulder and dangles down the side of his neck. He folds his hands in front of him with his sleeves joining together.

"I am Xan Chow-Huan, disciple of the Mountains Peak Monastery on a mission to seek out knowledge and magical artifacts for the elders to study and catalog." He says quietly, his young fat face has a cherub quality to it, but this only accentuates the honesty he projects.

"I have no need of horses but Sister Sarah the mule can carry much weight and she has come in very handy in the past."

Raddick glances at the haughty elf Kailus and jests, "I can certainly make it unbearable if that's your fucking attitude to us humans, mate. I am not your servant and if you even try to treat me like one I will put a arrow up your ass. We can restart this conversation over on a clean slate all nice and friendly, if you want. Or not, if want to bear with an unmitigated bastard. Heh, heh"

"But, you should know that I hunt magic using prigs for living."
he finishes in a flat tone, with fire and challenge in his eyes. He is not joking anymore.

The scout has trained to fight arcanists quite extensively and if he ever gets the jump on one of those blasted wizards they are usually dead with his first two arrows before they know what's happened.

Kailus turns to Raddick, surprised by the outburst He did not have a clue as to what could have caused offence. He had barely said two words to the uncouth human... He shuddered involuntarily at the thought of prolonged contact with people like this. Who knows what other undesirable element he would have to put up with.

"I had been warned that humans were prone to such outbursts, but I had not expected such venom. I guess it is something more that I will have to get used to." he sighs,
"I do hope for your sake that we end up hunting some magic using prig, since that is your living."

"I have no idea where you got the idea that I was treating you as a servant. If you are bearing a cross, then it is not one that I have given you."

"Meanwhile, yes, let's restart this conversation all nice and friendly. Let me see. I said 'Greetings', and then asked about stablers." Kailus recollects. "Perhaps it was my mistake in asking about stablers that has caused offence. I apologise for my inexperience of human protocol."

"Just 'Greetings' then."

A buxom barmaid with a pigtail comes over. She says, "Hello, my name's Trixie and I will be your server today. You boys look like you can use the Adventurer's Special, a hearty meal that is sure to fill your stomach and make you feel strong and able to tackle the toughest of monsters."
She gives wink to Xan and Raddick with a smile.

Ryllian addresses Kailus in her native tongue,

[elven]"Pay no mind brother, the world of men is drenched with fiery blood. Do not rely on their compassion, only their certainty of aggression, it is as much their greatest asset as it is their single downfall. I have it on good authority that these particular men are great warriors and can be trusted."[/elven]

She turns to the bar maid and speaks in the common tongue while bowing at the waist "I would be grateful for bread and wine young maenad."

[elven]"I was warned I suppose. They told me that I would find nothing but hatred and mistrust among human kind, but I thought that such racial generalisation must be misplaced."[/elven] Kailus sighs coming to the conclusion that those remarks must have been based on some truth at least. [elven]"Maybe it is just this one."[/elven] he adds hopeful to find other humans who are more civil.

To Trixie he says in common, "I fear that I am not yet accustomed to human foods, so will have to pass on whatever the Special is. Perhaps you have some wine and bread that I can sup on tonight."

Xan does not know what to make of the two Elves who exchange words in their native tongue in between conversing with the two humans in common. Starring at the two elegant creatures he wonders if they realize turning to each other and making comments in a foreign language after having a somewhat confrontational exchange would be viewed negatively.

While seemingly lost in thought his eyes suddenly light up and a slight smirk draws out from the side of his mouth as he turns to Raddick and speaks in the Dwarvish tongue. [Dwarvish] "Two can play at this game." [/Dwarvish]

Not to be rude towards the barmaid Xan turns to the exuberant young lady. "Greetings Trixie, I am called Xan Chow-Huan." He bows his head slowly. " One would like an ale please and bring another for my human friend here."

Raddick's joviality jesting nature disappears completely as the male elf professes ignorance of being rude and then decides to start sharing a private conversation in another language right in front of him.

His eyes narrow and he shakes his head slightly as Xan tries to do the same rude behavior in return. The scout is not very diplomatic, and prefers to get straight to the point, bluntly and brashly if necessary.

"Naw, Xan. I have no intention of being a rude asshole in return by speaking the dwarven tongue. I can be regular asshole just fine."

He points a finger at the two newcomers and his voice is still flat.

"What secrets are you two keeping now? Ya wanna get along and work together, I would knock that shit off right now."

"If you want to have private conversation, then tell us and go do it. Don't be rude about it by whispering and switching languages right in front of us."

"Previously, I was just being light hearted and only kidding as you were starting to be rude, Kailus. I would help ya if you really need it. All ya gotta ask nice instead of simply talking to us humans like it's a gods be damned chore and you are too good for us. But, I really don't care if your disparage humans in general nor think you are too good to eat food prepared by them."

"Xan, what the hell do elves eat that is different than the rest of us anyway? No meat?"
Raddick chuckles and waves away the matter.

He looks up at the barmaid. He gives her a gold coin and winks, "Trixie, lass. Bring us a couple of carafes of wine. Maybe getting our elven friend drunk will improve his disposition. I certainly need to be drunk if this is how we are going to start this job."

Trixie returns Raddicks wink with a sly smile while pocketing the coin. Returning to place the order at the bar she can be heard, "One large rock halved, a cask of wine and two ales!"

Image

She returns shortly with a small keg with spigot under one arm, and in her other a tray holding the bread, empty cups, and ale. Setting it all down the bread sounds heavier than the cask of wine.

"If you need anything else, just call me over." She says with a smile before leaving.

"Absolutely insufferable!" Ryllian replies to the warrior's outburst.

"As you may have noticed sir, we are elves. As such we share many commonalities, language being one and if you presume to give orders on where and when we may communicate we shall have a sour time indeed!"

Composing herself Ryllian continues "I certainly have every intention of providing my services to the group but right now you are the one who seems to be out of sorts. No one has said a word against you and yet you offer profanity and paranoia."

Taking the wine brought by the waitress she drinks deeply in agreement with the ranger's suggestion to let alcohol ease the occasion.

Kailus floats over Raddick's second outburst.

"I was not aware you were so sensitive, Sir Raddick." Kailus says, examining the bread that was delivered. "Thus far you have taken exception with what I said to you, what I said to someone else, and even what I ordered to eat. I really did not believe that what I ate was so important to you, but clearly you had to pass a comment on that."

"I did not see Sir Xan making such outbursts." he considers after a moment, "Are you the only human who cannot allow a stranger to order bread without passing a profane comment? Or are there others like you?"

He looks at the carafe of wine with a curious gaze, and then fingers one of the cups, watching how Ryllian drinks from it and trying to work out how to do exactly the same. Drinking wine from a cup. How novel! How can you see the 'colour' or 'clarity' of the wine though a cup?
