Kailus was having second thoughts about aggressive actions.
Whatever this creature was, it may or not be responsible for the insect creatures.
It had made no aggressive action so far.
And it was not associating with the insects at all

"Is this creature definitely something that we need to destroy?" Kailus asked. "I am having trouble understanding what it has done to harm us. Are we sure that it is the cause of the dwarven woe?"

Taking a few steps forward, Galaeron removed a small rolled piece of tallow, brimstone, and a dusting of powdered iron. A few gestures and a small sphere of flame burst into being above the creature in the water and dropped down upon it (presumably its head or craggy looking top bit.)

A burning globe of fire rolls in whichever direction you point and burns those it strikes. It moves 30 feet per round. As part of this movement, it can ascend or jump up to 30 feet to strike a target. If it enters a space with a creature, it stops moving for the round and deals 2d6 points of fire damage to that creature, though a successful Reflex save negates that damage. A flaming sphere rolls over barriers less than 4 feet tall. It ignites flammable substances it touches and illuminates the same area as a torch would.
The sphere moves as long as you actively direct it (a move action for you); otherwise, it merely stays at rest and burns. It can be extinguished by any means that would put out a normal fire of its size. The surface of the sphere has a spongy, yielding consistency and so does not cause damage except by its flame. It cannot push aside unwilling creatures or batter down large obstacles. A flaming sphere winks out if it exceeds the spell’s range.

Olbryn continued to study the treelike apparition at the far end of the cavern, unsure of how to proceed. She was not at all sure of what this creature might be, but so far it had not done them any harm, or indeed appeared to take the slightest notice of them. Relaxing a little, she took a few steps into the cavern and looked around to see if there might be another tunnel at the far end.

"What a strange creature this is - but I do wonder - could the insect creatures truly be related to it? It seems so very different, and has not made any attempt to attack us? Perhaps the creatures were feeding off it in some manner?"

Tashas's arrows and the burning sphere of flames had a noticeable effect on the creature inside the cone as it writhed more fervently.

Tasha had noticed a few similarities in racial properties between the creature in the water waving around its tentacles inside the conical nest and the insectoids the group defeated earlier. The most obvious of which is the regenerative properties and some comfort being in water. But the coloring appeared to match and the outer skin texture surface as well.

Another similarity was the creature being able to protect a magical darkness as suddenly the group found themselves not being able to see through the lack of illumination in their immediate surroundings.

Tasha’s assessments had more credence once the magical darkness enveloped them. “Too many similarrrities to be a differrrent type, I think. This crrreaturrre also has the ability make darrrk.”

“Besides, the dwarrrven minorrrs prrrobably don’t want it herrre forrr when they come back.”


She quickly moved out from the area of darkness and into the light of the wand again, much closer to the tentacle creature. She put another arrow into it.

Moving closer, out of the area of darkness, Galaeron surprised a little that it could influence the daylight spell so easily.
Nevertheless, he maintained the pressure on the creatures upper part with more heat from the Flaming Sphere.
"More fire would be good, if anyone has some available." Galaerno encouraged.

Kailus had to assume that casting darkness was an action of war, depsite the provocation that the creature had already received.
Though he disliked attack, he felt that tere was evidence that this creature was related to the creatures that they were all assuming had killed the dwarves of the mine.

With a sigh, he stepped forward.
"I have fire." he stated, "Either a flaming sphere, or a fireball." he explained.

"A fireball will do more immediate damage but will be short term and will cover a large area. In this enclosed cave it might well backfire on us."
"While a flaming sphere will do less damage, it can be sustained, as long as I can keep it balanced atop the creature, eventually doing more damage."

He paused. "I would prefer this course of action."

"Ack! More darkness!", Olbryn shouted as the magical gloom enveloped them once again. She had been all ready to fire at any threat, but now, unable to see, she stopped herself. Cautiously she advanced along the wall to her left until she stumbled out back into the comparative brightness of the illuminated cavern, next to Galaeron.

"Regrettably I have no fire magic to contribute, but there are other magics I could provide," she answers Galaeron, "Let me see what I can do..."
