Narissa kept her eye on Trinia in disguise, ever wary of the artist trying to make a bolt of it should she get spooked.

The tension among the guards was not lost on her either, but she did not see a cause for it that was immediately obvious. She nodded and murmured back to Visara, "Mayhap, you are correct. Though the other one did mention she was busy. Mayhap it is something else."

"After all, we were not warned to stay away either."

Narissa awaited the answers to Gweyn's questions.

The guard addressed nodded, “Yeah, we have seen you before.” He opened the gate as another went to fetch the Sergeant of the watch.

While the four waited a minute, another guard grumbled and answer to Gweyn’s question. “One of those Shoanti kids went and got himself killed, and now the rest of them are all worked up. Nothing but trouble.”

Another added unhappily, “Yeah, if it’s not one damned riot about to erupt, it’s another! Gods rot them all.”

The sergeant at the gate was one that sisters had spoken with before and the sentries deferred to him once he arrived. “Field Marshal Kroft’s in her office now, trying to talk some sense into the Shoanti ambassador. Come with me and I will let her know you are here.”

He escorted the three sisters and the disguised artist inside the building and into a meeting room with a large table with chairs around it. A single guardsman stayed with them while the Sergeant left to presumably talk with the Field Marshal.

Gweyn was quiet and thoughtful as they were led to the waiting room. Once there, she turned to her sisters. She murmured to them, keeping her voice low, but didn’t act covert about it. She wanted to appear polite, not furtive.

“Very interesting. It does seem like it is one thing after another in this place. It makes me wonder what puppetmaster is acting behind the scenes orchestrating all these things.”

Perhaps it was simply coincidence. But Gweyn doubted it. She frowned.

“Do either of you know something of the Shoanti, Sisters?” she asked. “I am trying to recall what I know, if anything.”

Unfortunately I haven't re-made my sheet yet, and can't roll anything because I don't know what I have...so let's just say that Gweyn doesn't know.

Narissa recalled some and shrugged, "There have been issues since the city's founding, some 300 years ago. The Chelish colonists had to take the land from them tribes to begin with and pushed the survivors to live to the northeast. No small wonder there is still bad blood among some."

"I think a lot of people in this city don't think much of the Shoanti, calling them simple and violent barbarians. Sounds like racists on both sides of the issue."

Considering all of the chaos as of late, she was not surprised if some took the opportunity to settle old scores or take advantage of things... in fact that was something she thought they should be doing themselves.

"Some might say this is an opportunity, dear Gweyn," she said soft and husky voice that the lone guard could not overhear.

Visara grunted at the discussion.

"You know what they say...chaos creates opportunity...or something along those lines."

The red head certainly was enjoying their time in the city. They were cowling or hiding about, waiting for pursuers to show up. They were busy making allies and safehouses. Sure, they could probably do it as such if the king hadn't got himself killed, but the chaos of his death had made it easier.

"Aye. We have the Marshal's ear so to speak...despite running her chores..."

Gweyn eyed Narissa, who had that look in her eye again, the one she got whenever bloodshed was imminent. Only this was bloodshed of another kind.

It made face radiant and her eyes gleam, her skin suffused with a healthy glow. It was hard for Gweyn to ignore the way Narissa smelled, faintly musky, like exotic spices. Her eyes slid away, and she stared for a moment at the wall across from them.

“What…what were you thinking, Sister?” Opportunities. Narissa saw opportunities in almost any situation, frequently in ways Gweyn would never have imagined. “Should we offer to take care of this…Shoanti problem?”

She paused, lips pressing together.

“In the most expedient way possible, I am assuming.”

Before Narissa could answer about her ideas of opportunity, if she would even reveal such thoughts with one of the Guard present, the door to the room opened and in walked Field Marshall Kroft with the officer that Gweyn had spoken with at the tavern. She dismissed the man that was silently watching over you during the wait.

She did not look happy and got straight to the point.

“Okay you are here and I am busy. Did you find what I asked?” she inquired while looking sidelong at the disguised Trinia, likely unsure how much to come right out and say in front of the stranger.

Image
The disguised artist had not joined in the conversation during the wait, not having an opinion on the Shoanti problems facing the city. She pointedly kept his/her mouth shut when the Field Marshall arrived, but she clearly looked uncomfortable when Kroft’s eye looked him/her over.

Visara had a moment to ponder the implications of what Narissa and Gweyn were subtly implying. Dealing with such an issue in a swift and violent manner was something the half-dragon could get behind. But her thoughts were quickly cut off when the Field Marshal arrived.

From the looks of it, the woman had a harried look about her. It seems that the current crisis at the citadel was causing an undue amount of stress.

Visara cleared her throat.

“Aye, that we did in a manner of speaking.”

She glanced at Gweyn and Narissa for them to continue as they were better at words than she.

“Yes,” Gweyn said, gravely, holding eye contact with Kroft. “We understand that you are very busy, but we have something very important to tell you regarding your task. May we speak with you privately for a moment?”

She paused, inclining her head respectfully.

“We would not ask if it were not very important.”

The marshal remained stern and unsmiling, Gweyn saw.

Narissa glanced at Gweyn with an arched eyebrow at the lame attempt to convince Kroft to send her officer away. It was not like her sister to be so cold about the request.

"Indeed, let us send the underlings away so we can discuss this. We already told your man there we did not want to tell him anything and whether you share the knowledge with him anything later is up to you."

She was not especially convincing in her tone either; her heart was not really in it. She truly did not care if the officer was present or not, but was trying to go along with her sister's intentions.

Field Marshall Kroft had a stern look. She was a busy woman and the little games being played with her officers and her time was not something she really wanted to put up with given the circumstances. "It fine. He knows discretion so let's get on with it. If he didn't then I would have left him outside to begin with."

"Besides, I have something else I might need your help with and I do not have all day." She gestured for Gweyn to proceed.

The artist in disguise had no comment, waiting to see what would happen.

Gweyn sighed. She had tried.

“As you wish.”

She reached out, and plucked the hat off the disguised artist’s head. The magic spell gone, the illusion of the young fellow faded and Trinia appeared in his place. Gweyn slipped the magic hat away before they got a good look at it.

She nodded at the young artist.

“Here you are,” she said to Kroft.

Visara was not surprised at the Marshal’s patience or lack of. The woman did look weary as it was, and was not in the mood for games. The barbarian was fine with that.

The redhead was surprised at Gweyn’s swift revealing of the artist. She had figured the werehound was going to pass her off as the cousin or something. Not that it mattered one or another to the red headed fighter.

As such, Visara quickly put herself between the artist and the door in case Trinia was stupid enough to make a run for it.

“Aye, we should have put a bow on her for you too…” she commented.

Narissa was too slow and would have yanked off the hat for the big reveal if Gweyn had not done it. Instead, she used her booted foot to push on the back of Trinia’s knees to buckle them and put a hand on the artist’s shoulder to push her down to her knees at the same time.

“She was going to give us a merry chase earlier, so we don’t want her trying anything funny now that she is here and revealed. We needed to keep the mob from getting her, thus the disguise.”

“Of course like they all do, she claims innocence,” she remarked with a bit of cynicism in her tone and nearly scoffed.

Narissa gestured for the officer to take custody the prisoner.

Trinia squeaked, “Hey!” as she was abruptly revealed, shoved to her knees and turned over. “Y-y-you betrayed me!”

Image Image
Field Marshall Kroft commented curtly, “So you did succeed after all. You could have just given her over to my officer and saved me all this nonsense.”

She ordered her officer, “Captain, take her to the cell, the far one where no one will see her for now. I will deal with her later. Keep her quiet.”

The officer opened the door where you entered and issued orders in low voice to the man outside. Then he shut the door and came back across the room to watch his prisoner closely. “Do not speak or twitch,” he growled menacingly at Trinia who started weeping.

Turning away, Kroft gestured for the three sisters to follow her out the other door where she came in, presumably a door closer to her own office. She said, “I will get your payment to you before you leave.”
