~ 2 Weeks later – 13:15: Midland ~

It had been weeks since the King Eodred II’s death, and things were finally starting to get back to normal in Korvosa. Yet still the streets thrummed with unrest and wild rumors. Crime seemed to be on the rise, with pickpocketings, robberies, and assaults skyrocketing. Some still hissed “usurper” and “murdering harlot” at the mere utterance of Ileosa’s name, and more shockingly, rumors that the king’s death was not of natural causes increasing. According to a significant amount of the populace, the rumor mills have been declaring the Queen the primary suspect in poisoning the late King.

Then, more recently word spreads of an actual suspect, a young artist by the name of a pretty young artist named Trinia Sabor who painted a portrait of the king not half a month before his death.

A city-wide hunt was called for by the Guard after learning of a confession from a co-conspirator amongst their own. The guardsman committed suicide by leaping through a window of one of the tower in Castle Korvosa.

In no time, Trinia’s name became a household word, and once again riots threatened to erupt in the streets. This time, however, the cries were not for the Queen’s death, but the death of the King’s “true” murderer, one Trinia Sabor.

Just after a midday meal, you were approached by a breathless member of the Korvosan Guard while you were walking down the street. He was one that looked familiar from your previous visits to the Citadel, but you never actually caught his name.

“Your pardon, but Field Marshall Kroft needs to speak with you immediately… she will meet you at the Three Rings Tavern shortly if you would go there now.”

The rumors had been troubling to Gweyn. Full of misogyny, first directed at the queen, then at this painter who became a suspect. She wondered if the painter was a patsy, set up the by queen herself, someone to direct attention away from her. It was such a tangled mess that she knew that the likes of her would never know the truth.

Gweyn always asked where people had heard said rumors, but no one ever seemed to know. ‘I heard it around’ or ‘someone said’ was what people said most often.

She cocked her head and stared when the guardsman approached them. Apparently they were so noteworthy that a common guardsman could pick them out by sight. She supposed they were striking enough, but it was still somewhat discomforting to know they were known by sight to the guard. They would have to be extra careful about their clandestine activities.

Gweyn listened to the guardsman’s request, then nodded, sparing a glance in her sisters’ direction.

“Of course,” she said, face very serious. “We’ll go right away.”

She paused.

“Please tell her we will be there when she arrives.”

She waited for the guardsman to scurry off.

“Interesting,” she murmured to her sisters. “I suppose we should hurry.”

Narissa said nothing until the guard trotted off down a side street, presumably heading towards the citadel the Guard used for headquarters. She had noted that he had come from the direction of North Point and it could have been chance that he found them on the street when they had not been at the tavern.

She shrugged. “Oh, I think we have some time yet. After all, she is coming to us. The summons was not to go to the citadel.”

“Do you think she is up to something and needs some specialist help of a discrete nature?”

As they had been hearing rumors around the city about the events as of late, the requested meeting’s timing and location was also out of the ordinary too.

Visara eyed the guard as he left the inn and headed back to his duties. In honest, the half-dragon was getting antzy herself, and was glad for the summoning. Being idle for the last two weeks had grated on her patience, and she was well ready for some action.

"Indeed. To be meeting at an inn instead of the fortress. Something must be troubling."

Gweyn had shared her speculation of the rumors and such going around about the painter. To the red head, it didn't make much sense that the painter would want the late king dead. Much like Narissa, Visara thought he was simply a fall guy. It was too convenient.

"I suppose we should be dressed for business, should we not?"

It never hurt to be prepared.

Gweyn nodded.

“Yes. We might have to leave immediately on some task or another.”

She murmured, though the crowd was busy enough she did not feel like there was much chance that anyone could be listening to them. Still, it paid to be careful. Enough odd things had happened to them while strolling through town that Gweyn did not wish to take any chances.

It was a nice day. Seabirds circled lazily overhead, and they made Gweyn think of Majenko, who she hoped was doing fine and enjoying his life and freedom.

She turned and looked at Visara.

“Should we head back to Pontia’s and pick up what we need before we head to the Three Rings?”

Narissa had all her essentials already with her as they walked about the city. With the mob activity and rioting, she carried her ranseur in hand and all her other weapons about her person. She wore her armor and carried everything else of value. With paladins expected to eventually come looking, she was not about to walk the streets unprepared.

“What more do you think we need besides weapons and armor?”

“If what she asks of us requires traveling farther afield, we might want horses and traveling provisions anyway.”

“But I have no issue with making the Field Marshal wait on us if you both need to stop at the inn,” Narissa added with a wicked smile. She thought Kroft might need a reminder that she and her sisters were not at her beck and call.

Gweyn shook her head.

She also carried all she needed with her, after several unfortunate incidents within the city’s borders.

“I do not need anything. But I believe Visara does.”

She shrugged, glancing at Visara.

“But if what you have to get is not urgent, Sister, I believe we should go right away. After all, that is what I said to the guardsman. We should try to be people of our words. The request was not unreasonable.”

"Nah, I came prepared. Just thought I would ask."

Visara had been her usually assortment of weapons and armor about her. The equipment marked her to passerbys as some one not to be trifled with. If some one did decided to mess with the red head, she would make sure they would regret it.

"Let's be about it then. I hope Kroft has some heads for us to crack."

With every one ready and prepared, and no other stops planned. Visara and the sisters headed off down the street at a leisurely pace.

~ 13:45: North Point - Three Rings Tavern ~

Less than a half hour later, you arrived at the now familiar tavern in North Point. The quiet tavern was much as you were used to. The matronly proprietor, Theandra Darklight gave you a smile and gestured towards an empty table. The rugged (and barely tame looking) bouncer Tauk Par she employed looked none too happy, but he was usually a taciturn fellow on his best days.

It was not long to wait in suspense as the Field Marshall soon arrived with two of her officers and a couple men-at-arms. The soldiers waited at the door, while the two officers went to the bar to speak to the proprietor.

Cressida Kroft spotted you right away and approached. She was all business and said rather bluntly, "Good, you all here. Let us speak somewhere privately."

She glanced at her two officers, and one nodded as the proprietor was taking them towards a door to one of the private rooms in the back of the tavern. Without further explanation, Field Marshall Kroft gestured for you all to follow her, "Come this way."

She turned and made her way to the private room and told one of her officers to ensure they were not interrupted and discourage any and all potential eavesdroppers. The two officers accepted their orders as strict discipline decreed with crisp acknowledgement. Kroft disappeared inside.

The two guardsmen at the entrance moved towards you as they glanced around the tavern at the other patrons. No one was really paying much undue attention after noting the Field Marshall's arrival.

Gweyn was gratified that they had arrived before the field marshal.

She thought it important to project a professional mien, so she nodded crisply as well, and followed along. It was the domain of the less confident to do more posturing. She did glance around, noting that no one seemed to be paying them undue attention, but a true spy would not be. She knew that they could not be too careful.

However, she doubted this was a trap set by the field marshal herself. Walking into confined quarters with them was not a good tactical move.

Gweyn walked into the private room, looking around.

Visara eyed the guards that had accompanied the field marshal. They looked competent, for guards at any rate. Though probably not much of a challenge to the red head and her sisters. Either way, there presence meant that this visit was some what an oddity.

THe half-dragon followed along with her sisters and Field Marshal Kroft into one the back private rooms. Once there, Visara glanced around and took a spot by the wall for the time being.

Narissa looked almost bored with the ordeal of meeting the high ranking Guard leader and her flunkies. Privacy here in the tavern was an oddity as Kroft had an office for those kind of meetings already.

But then here, the Field Marshal had only a few select men from her organization knowing who she met with.

As she followed after, her sultry voice commented for only her sisters to hear.

"Mayhap she is sanctioning us to remove a certain male arachnid fellow."

You entered the private room and Field Marshal Kroft remained standing as she gestured for you three to sit down. Her officers shut the door and remained outside as her other two men-at-arms took up positions flanking the door outside. You were alone with the leader of the Guard.

“You’ve doubtless heard the stories that the king’s killer has been named. Yet there’s something more going on here, I’m afraid. Queen Ileosa could have quietly had this Trinia Sabor arrested at any time, yet the way in which she revealed the information to the city seems to me like she wants the riots to come back. Certainly, with the mob and the Hellknights out on the street, the girl doesn’t stand a chance at a trial—they’ll lynch her the moment they find her. And even if she did kill the king, mob justice isn’t the way. Worse, if she’s innocent, the real killer can use this distraction to throw us off the trail forever.”

“Before Trinia is executed, we need to be absolutely sure she did this thing. And that means we need to catch her before the mob. We know where she lives—a flat in Midland at 42 Moon Street—but soon, so will the mob. The Hellknights don’t seem to care as much about catching her as they do about containing the mob—something about the ‘order of law’ makes it a greater priority for them to contain than a possible assassin. I can’t say I disagree completely, but the problem is, the Hellknights are only making it worse. The mob’s covering most of Midland now, and Trinia’s flat is near the middle of the mess. I’ve got all available guards at work keeping things from getting any worse—and if I were to send them into Midland, they’d trigger a riot.”

“I’m sure you can see where this is going. I need you to get into Midland, find Trinia, and bring her back to me so we can deliver her, safe and sound, to somewhere here she can be interrogated—preferably with magic, so we can be absolutely sure about her role in Eodred’s death. Get in there, catch her, and get out without letting the mob get its hands on her. I’ll have agents and officers nearby. If you can get her to one of them, we’ll be in the clear.”

“Any questions?”

Gweyn nodded.

It took her a few moments to process what the marshal had said. It was a lot of information, some of it disturbing. She had not heard about the mob. It seemed unreal that such a thing could be going on in the same city, and they would have no indication of it. What if the mob came in their direction? She wondered if they should warn Pontia.

“Yes,” she said. “I do have a few questions.”

Her brow furrowed.

“By what means did you learn of where this Trinia Sabor is living? And how do you presume that the mob will learn this information?”

Gweyn had more questions relating to other aspects of the job, but she decided to start with the most pertinent and go on from there, as the answers might trigger other questions first.

Narissa was not sure if the rioting and mobs were a bad thing. If the sisterhood had any enemies the time to strike would be ripe if they would catch them in Midland.

But so far the bitch's paladin had not shown up looking for them.

"So you don't want us to interrogate the woman? We could."

"What if she will not come willingly and we have to... ah, persuade her quite forcibly and she become rather damaged?"

The half-fiend was already picturing this sniveling artist begging on her knees for life. Slapping the coward silly might be necessary.
