Gothrom works tirelessly at keeping the Ogre dead, hacking at the regenerating corpse until Ashleigh is able to fully destroy the body with her witch-fire. As far as calming emotions goes, taking his furstrations out on a body is even better with the knowledge that the creature is technically still alive. Hope it could feel it!

He snorts at Phaeral's comment. "Close? I'm still good for a dozen more at least!" There is a large bleeding gash in his shoulder and frostbite in his extremities, but it would take more than that to stop Gothrom Blackhammer. Killing Ogres was the work that he was born and bred for, although he had not had the chance to test that before today. "I feel great!"

He turns to Rahn, "Was afraid that we had lost you, for a second back there!" He gives the cleric a hearty slap on the back, relieved to see that he is alive and well.

As Phaeral brings their attention back to the wizard, Gothrom glances at the blood stains on the floor and winces. He would hate to have made it all this way for naught, even if the death of the five ogres brought a measure of consolation. He waits quietly, stopping even his breathing for a moment, for a reply to Phaeral's call.

Rahn staggers a bit from the dwarfs slap, grimacing slightly. "Indeed. Didn't know what hit me." the cleric responds. Truth be told, the ogre mage nearly did him in as well. Luckily, the hard to kill brute lays scorched and very dead.

Putting his weapons away, the cleric sees about healing himself and his wounded comrades. Rahn first moves to Phaeral, healing the worst of his wounds, and then moves to Gothrom. Rahn pulls out the wand of healing to finish the job.

Ashleigh puts away the tanglefoot bag, the use of it unnecessary, "It is a good thing it did not have more than one of those cold attacks."

She listens for a response to Phaeral's calling out, the tower is quiet and no one is answering. Noticing the blood, she shakes her head, "The ogre mage was in here a long time before we got its attention and it decided to come outside. Do you think the wizard could have survived on his own?"

It would appear that the only way to know for sure would be to go up the stairs, but she is not willing to go first.

“Thanks for the healing, Rahn.”

Phaeral cautiously stretched a little, feeling new wounds pull and sting. Still, the cleric had healed the worst of his injuries, and he felt considerably better. He pushed a hand through his damp hair, blinking the sweat from his eyes.

He turned to Ashleigh.

“I know,” he said, quietly, voice grave. “It doesn’t look good. I was just…hoping.”

He tried to look on the bright side of things, usually. In this case, maybe it meant that the Ogre Mage had spent so long in the wizard’s house because he was busy torturing the man. Perhaps it had been no swift murder, but an extended period of horrible suffering. Perhaps the Ogre Mage had been indulging some twisted desires and had not wanted to stop, even when the sounds of battle had broken out nearby.

Phaeral shuddered, trying to banish the horrific images that had suddenly sprung to mind.

He stepped forward and started up the stairs cautiously, steeling himself for the worst.

“Hello? Hello, Ezreal?”

"Them damned demons be one step ahead of us everytime!" Gothrom roars, clenching his fists tighter around his weapons. He takes a deep breath to calm himself; no use getting angry when there is nothing left to take it out on. He continues more calmly. "They knew about the old padre and the church, now they knew about our wizard. Do ya think the demons were listening in before they appeared? Or was that paragon fellow a spy, him and his wolf? It be almost as if..." He throws a hard glance at Ashleigh, then shakes his head without finishing his thought.

Hoisting up his shield and holding his axe if front of him, he turns to Phaeral and follows him down the stairs, as quietly as he can manage with his armor.

Putting the wand of healing away after use, Rahn grabs his lonspear and makes to follow up after Gothrom. "Maybe the wizard is holed up somewhere upstairs," the cleric says hopefully. He gave some though to the dwarfs implication, but didn't agree with it. Perhaps the cleric was too trusting, but he didn't think any one of the group was a spy or instrument of the demons.

Ashleigh returns Gothrom's hard look with an eyebrow raised, "What? I am not sure what you are implying, Gothrom."

"Surely you don't think I am a spy!?"

After using seven charges from the wand, Rahn is completely healed and both Phaeral and Gothrom only have minor wounds remaining.

Climbing the stairs, you can quite clearly that you interrupted whatever the ogre mage was doing. The place appears to be in the beginning stages of being ransacked. This floor appears to be the wizard's private work area. He had a small bed, rather plain, but the rest of the room in the hollowed out tree is devoted to his research and arcane arts.

There are book shelves with tomes and scrolls, many of which are already on the floor. There is an alchemist's table with reagents and components amid flasks, vial, and beakers, some of the items are tipped over, but the brute had not gotten around to destroying or trashing these. There is a small bed, not much to look at. Among the shelves and along the walls, there are several small boxes and containers, ranging from a few footlocker-sized and some hat-boxed sized; some of these have been crushed in the activity that took place before your arrival.

There are more wet blood stains on the floor, and mature looking elf sprawled out, unmoving. The wounds are fresh, but no longer pumping blood, clearly indicating the body is deceased.

“Oh, no,” Phaeral stared at the body for a few moments, then knelt to gently check over the dead elf.

He pressed two fingers to the elf’s neck, seeking a pulse, but found nothing. The skin was still warm but not warm enough. Phaeral hung his head.

“How did they find him?” he muttered, shaking his head. “First Father Darrenson, and now his friend. I feel like we’re somehow the cause of this, that the demons wouldn’t be attacking these good people and sending their minions to kill them if it wasn’t for us.”

He looked up, his gaze going from Ashleigh’s face, to Gothrom’s, to Rahn’s, his expression twisted in pain.

“I don’t know what we can even do now. It’s a dead end. Surely locating and shutting down the portal is something that is beyond our understanding, even if we should find his notes and research.”

His shoulders slumped.

“Well, I guess we should give Ezreal a funeral. That is probably something we can do.”

Gothrom briefly turns back towards Ashleigh. "I didn't say that", he tells her, before disappearing up the stairs. Inwardly, he is feeling a bit conflicted; on one hand, he is feeling a measure of guilt for suspecting a companion that he has been through so much with, even one he is less fond of than some, but on the other, it really does seem that the devils are inexplicably aware of all their plans, and humans are known to be overly-ambitious and treacherous, even those who do not delve in powers beyond traditional magic. Over the course of his life, Gothrom has known wizards, and Ashleigh's fire is no normal wizardry.

Gothrom lets out a series of curses as he enters the wizard's study and catches Phaeral's pained look. "Back to square one!", he complains, slamming his fist into a nearby wall. "Them fuckin' devils and their Ogres mates will be paying for this, ya can be sure of it!" He takes a deep breath to calm himself down, then leaves his companions with the tasks of searching the wizard and his study, knowing that he would not be much help. Potions and books...

Meanwhile, he keeps an eye one Ashleigh.

Rahn enters the upstairs following Gothrom and Phaeral. "Damn, " he simple says as the sight before the group. Maybe it could be some one else, Rahn thinks to himself as he kneels down and examines the body shaking his head. There would be no reason for any one else to be around.

After his examination, Rahn says a small prayer to speed the elf's spirit to the afterlife before straightening back up. Looking around the arcane lab, Rahn takes in a deep breath before saying, "Well at least we stopped them from making off with whatever else the beasts were searching for. So all is not completely lost I think." The cleric tries to put a good face on it, despite the grim circumstances.

Ashleigh is still not sure what Gothrom's stink eye is all about, but she soon forgets it as she views the carnage and mess.

"Oh, no!... So he is dead?" After Phaeral's confirmation, she looks sad and just shakes her head, their victory seams hollow now. After some silence, she begins looking around at the mess and wonders after Rahn's mention of a glimmer of hope, "I think you are right, somewhere in this mess, there could be the information we are looking for. Maybe we just need to search for it."

Activating her mage sight to see magical auras, Ashleigh peers around to see if there are useful items to find.

Amid the alchemical clutter she finds moderate auras on five small flasks of liquid with a golden sheen in the clear glass. There is a faint aura from the wizard's pocket and she pulls out a pearl. One of the dusty boxes, about the size of a hat-box has something inside. Opening it, she pulls out a crystal shard about 6 inches long. There are some notes on parchment in the box as well, but she cannot read them as they are written in a language she doesn't know.

Ashleigh shows the others what she has found.

“Could this be unconnected to the devils?” Phaeral wondered out loud, then shook his head. “No, that’s too much of a coincidence. But if they sent the Ogre Mage in here, knowing he would be able to see the magical auras as you do, then he was probably looking for something magical, perhaps one of these things you’ve found.”

He looked between the objects Ashleigh presented to them.

“Of these, this crystal looks the most important. But we just don’t know enough to be sure.”

Phaeral sighed and rubbed his face tiredly.

“We don’t know anything about him. Maybe he has family, an apprentice or something, someone who would know his wishes, or could give us some guidance with these things. I don’t want to loot his belongings if they’re not relevant to our mission. Perhaps he had a journal or something…”

Trailing off, Phaeral began to look around for something more personal than alchemical or magical research.

Gothrom takes a moment to consider the wizard's belognings and what to do with them. "I be thinking that we should take all we can and bring it with us," he declares gruffly, his tone free of avarice. "No sense leaving them for looters and thieves, or the devils, should they return. We can try and find a relative of his to give them to, but that may be a death sentence to one who doesn't know what they are." If they cannot find a relative, they would be left with the choice of selling them or giving them away, or perhaps they could be use to persuade a different wizard to help their cause. Ezeral cannot have been the only wizard with this knowledge...

He glances at the crystal in Ashleigh's hands and raises an eyebrow. "What do ya got there?", he asks, trying to indentify the mineral.

Glancing over the items that Ashleigh founds, Rahn shrugs his shoulder. His guess at the shard was as good as any. Taking looking at the unfamiliar writing on the parchment notes, the cleric asks, "Any one recognize the writing? Being an elf's home, would it be elven?"
