Fallout:[IC] - Ch 5 - Reluctant Love

September 6th, Morning – Mint Hill outpost

The night passed, and morning arrived. No one had bothered with you and your stuff during the night. True to Mordecai's word, people of the outpost respected your personal space. A watch would have been unnecessary. The uninterrupted night's sleep also did wonders to the previous days trials. Every one felt better for it.

The weather for the day was not going to be sunny as it was the previous two days. Clouds filled the sky, but rain seemed unlikely. The smell of the morning cook fires permeated the outpost as it began to wake from the night.

The four of you stirred, woke and prepared to head out. Frankie came around with breakfast and inquired.

"So, I wish you all luck. I am assuming you are going to follow up on that lead?"

Zak tucked into the food, hungry now that he had a good rest. Between mouthfuls he replied, “Thanks.”

“We will keep an eye out… but maybe it is better that you don’t know what we are doing should those stiff-necks in armor come around asking about us. No need to put you in a position to lie for us.”

“We are going keep looking for his,” he gestured to Givens, “and do trading with the other settlements.”

After wiping the crusty sleep from his eyes and swilling some water around to get the smell of death from his mouth, Givens looked over the camp.
He added his gear to the Brahmin pack beast so he would be ready to leave when his companions were.

Joining them for food, Givens put his caps worth into the discussion.
"Aye, lookin', little tradin', killin' any darn raiders who pop da heads up."
Givens added, "Justa day in da wastelands."

“Thanks,” Robin said, simply, and left it at that.

Zak was right and they didn’t need to be telling their business to anyone, especially someone that could later pass on exactly what they had said. Frankie had no particular reason to be loyal to them, after all. It was better for all involved.

He ate like a feral dog, hunched over his food like he expected someone to try to take it away.

Robin wiped his mouth with the back of his hand when he was done, then raised his scarf to cover his nose and mouth. He spent a few seconds adjusting it, then pulled his pack closer to him.

Mordecai had risen early that morning. His limbs were still a bit stiff from the tumble with the Super Mutant, but not as much as before. Before too long, the scout should be back to normal. Something he was glad for.

The tall man had already pulled his pack and such together. He was ready to head out with the others.

When Frankie approached, he nodded in agreement with Zak for digression. The less his friend and outpost knew, the better.

"He's right, " he replied.

"Well continue on looking for Given's wife and keep an eye out."

Frankie nodded once in understanding, and wished you all luck. He walked away to take care of some chore or another.

"Alright, " said Mordecai to the rest of you.

"Ready?"

Zak was still stuffing the food into his mouth like there was no tomorrow and they needed to catch the bus out of town. He nodded as he started putting his gear together and loading it on the Brahmin.

Swallowing he said, "Yeah, let's git. We wanted ta git an early start." He donned his backpack, the weight not too much with the heavier stuff on the pack animal. He would be able to move quickly with his lighter encumbrance.

He slung the rifle over his shoulder, and gave a thumbs up gesture that he was good to go.

With his Brahmin packed, and watered, Givens waited till Zak had finished, "Yous wantin' me to lead it."
"Or yous gunna gives it a whirl."

He looked over the packing to see if it was balanced, without touching.
It was evident, Givens was trying to help the lads out without impeding their efforts to grow in the wasteland.

September 6th, Morning – Inside the 485 look, northeast of Mint Hill

Every one was packed and ready. THe newly purchased wheels tied were secured to the Brahmin, as well as any other excess gear. The people of the outpost took note, and some wished you luck in whatever endevaors as the group of made your way to the gate. At the gate, Frankie noted that he had heard anything new on the road ahead, and likewise wished you luck. He shook hands with you all as a parting good bye, and headed off back into the outpost.

The four of you set up with the brahmin in tow. Modercai as usually, was out leading and scouting at the same time.

For the most part you stuck with surface streets, rather than the old highway that comprised of the 485 loop. The streets had ruins on either side, and many old and rusted cars. Many looked to have scavenged over the years. Every once and while, you would hear the cries of some kind of wild life, but nothing dangerous approached your group. Nor were there any signs of the Enclave fly machines or steel soldiers.

Every now and then you would come across tracks, human made. These reminded you that the wasteland wasn't empty. Mordecai coudn't tell if they were raider tracks or some other wastelanders, and thought it not best to follow them.

The scout didn't have too much trouble finding the old woman's radio station. Agatha was her name as he explained. Just before lunch, the scout had lead you back towards 485. Nestled near some collapsed on ramps for the freeway was shack built in a rocky gully. At one side stood a radio tower of sorts, presumably for the station itself. The building looked to be a one or two room affair, and may extend into the rocks behind. THe hard looked a bit unkempt, and the door was closed.

Modercai stopped a some distance away, as he wasn't sure how to proceed.

Zak closed in with Mordecai from his position as a flanker. He motioned for Rob and Givens to gather around as well. They could barely see the radio station from where the scout paused in his approach, but they could make enough. "Well, I don't see any signs of life. Maybe we should split into two groups. One to carefully move closer and sticking low and to cover."

The other pair swings around wide and approaches the station from above to the right there. They can nearly come upon it unseen while it is in that gully. They can be in position before the farther group heads straight in, that way we can spoil any sort of ambush."

"Givens, maybe you and Rob be the group coming straight in from here, keeping a sharp eye on the sight with the binoculars. Mord and I can sneak around to the side."

Givens had tied the Brahmins off to a bumper of a car so they could graze.
With gun and binoculars in hand he sat in the lee of a rusted car, looking around the rocky gully.

Whispering to his companions, "Place likely got critters."
"Mole rats, rad scorpion or roaches." Givens counseled.

"If she be alive best, mu be Robyn n me janders in wiff da beasts."
"Lookin' traders n all."
"summin' we gunna do such."

Training the binoculars towards the entrance he scanned for recent blood pools. Raiders were always messy and liked to leave fearful presence of there passing.

“Okay. That sounds good to me.”

Robin was glad they were away from strangers, so he could go back to talking normal. It would probably be better if he practiced the patois when they were alone, so he could both improve his proficiency with it and fall back on it naturally, but he found himself reluctant. He didn’t want to become someone else. He was who he was.

He peered at the shack and the surrounding environs, trying to see anything he could see. Since the old lady’s home was fairly common knowledge, he assumed that others could have been out this way as well, if not to check on her, to see what they could loot.

“All right, we’ll just keep it slow and steady, yeah? Just walk forward slowly and keep looking around while you guys cover us.”

Zak turned to Mord, "Maybe we should use the Gillie suits that we have. We have been carrying them around all this time."

He pulled the camouflage suit from his belongings and donned it over his clothes. It was a little bulky, but when crawling around the wasteland, he would look like dried bush. Leaving most of his other gear with the brahmin, he only carried his weapons and few pieces of gear like the multi-tool and flashlight. He kept the rifle in hand.

While Rob and Givens were observing the gully, he would make his way around the flank and then crouch down and crawl slowly as they go close.

Mordecai nodded as Zak took charge and recommended a course of action. The teenager seemed to have apitude for leadership, and the scout was apt to let him learn. It was a hard skill to nurture in the wasteland. The tall man though to give Zak every opportunity.

The tall scout gazed towards the shack and tower. Robin had a point...the place was known and surely some one had checked out the place before now.

"Right, best be cautious. Two groups. Once Zak and I are in place, we can signal you two to proceed up the gully itself. "

Mordecai grabbed the other guillie suit and donned it as well. Once ready, the scout took the lead and headed up the rocks.

The four of you split up into your pairs, and proceeded to cautiously approach the shack and tower. Robin and Givens found a ruined car to crouch behind that was set back far enough from the building and still provide a line of site to the ridge. Zak and Mordecai picked there way among the rocks and slowly ascended the ridge.

Sunshine would occasionally beam down from a break in the clouds and there didn't seem to much of a breeze. The wasteland sounds were normal and didn't nothing seemed out of place.

Both Zak and Mordecai noticed that the shack and radio tower were very much intact. No damage or any signs of scavenging. Something the scout thought was odd if it was known the old lady's station had been known to others. Some one would have investigate surely.

Zak with his younger eyes notice that the appeared to be some kind of black marks on some of the rocks leading up to the building. They were about the twice the size of a man's fist, and looked unnatural. The teenager would have to get closer to tell more.

Zak and Mordecai were nearly up above the shack.

Robin crouched behind the rusted car, clenching his teeth as he waited. Zak and Mordecai seemed to be moving as slow as the trickle of sweat down his back, interminable and relentless at once. Robin was aware of every stray sound, from the grinding of sand under his boots every time he shifted in place, to the electric buzz of insects that passed near every now and then.

He kept his eyes on the shack, looking for any sign of moment, but saw none. It seemed to be silent and still. Not even any buzzards were circling. He kept waiting for something unexpected to happen, but it never did.

Robin glanced sidelong at Givens, who was waiting next to him. When Zak and Mord gave the signal, they would move out. Until then, they had to wait.

“Hey,” he whispered to Givens, and stared ahead again. “You ever hear this old lady’s broadcast? Or anyone talking about it?”
