The bartender looked over and moved away from Mordecai to take your drink orders.

“What will it be? We have the local brew, clean water, and some coffee?”

Apparently there is no longer a drinking age as the man doesn’t flinch at Zak or Robin’s youthful face.

Mordecai nodded his acceptance to the bartender and glanced over as Zak took a seat at the bar. He had finished his meal as evident by an empty plate, and his mug was half full. The scout had ended his conversation with the bartender as the man went to do his job of full filling the drinks, fixing Mordecai another of what he already has.

The scout turned as the rest of seated yourselves and nodded in appreciation for the drink.

“Thanks, man. Don’t mind at all.”

The thin man downed his half-finished drink in preparation for the new one. He set the mug and moved the plate closer to the inside of the bar, within easy reach to be cleaned up.

“Yeah, I know what you mean. Pack of swarming ferals can do that. You guys did good out there for being fresh out of the Vault.”

“So Boris treat you right?”

Zak grinned at the bartender, “Local brew, of course.” He had no taste for the bitter coffee and they had plenty of time to only drink water when away from Carolina Place.

The teenager turned back to Mordecai and said, “Thanks. We did learn a few things along the way and getting here was not easy to begin with. After we got rid of out dead weight…”

“No offense to you, Rob,” he said as he turned to the good twin as he alluded to his idiot brother.

“We have less to worry about in a scrape.”

“In fact we were just talking with Darrel and a caravan is due either tomorrow or the day after and we are hoping to get a decent deal on a rifle or two. I am hoping to have a weapon like yours next time. Then we will be better prepared on our next excursion.”

Robin gave a half-shouldered shrug as Zak mentioned Patrick, shaking his head slightly. He would rather not acknowledge Patrick at all, and just pretend that he had never existed. No one could understand what it was to be a twin if they weren’t one, and how painful the separation was when you didn’t get along.

He nodded at Mordecai.

“Thanks for saying so. We have a long way to go before we’re as good out there as you are, but at least we have something to aspire to.”

Robin paused, casually.

“What are you going to be doing next?”

As the drinks arrive Mercevial raises his glass and clinks it with Mordecai first and then the boys. "To survival..." he cheers as he takes a sip. Other than that he remains quiet for the time being, the young medic broaching the subject they wanted an answer to already.

The lawman glances over as a scraggly looking mongrel sticks it's head in the door and sniffs around. It makes it's way into the establishment and moves cautiously through the room. No one pays attention to the dog as it makes its way around, sniffing the floor, taking up scraps and other objects into it's mouth. Mercevial lowers his hand towards the floor and snaps a couple of times, lightly. He keeps an eye on the dog through his peripheral vision. Wagging it's tail the mutt comes and nuzzles the ex-VSFers hand.

The lawman listens to the snipers answer with great interest.

The barman worked his tap handle as he poured the drinks in fresh mugs. He set them down at each person, then took a scrap a paper and started a tab. The bartender then took Mordecai’s dishes and went to the back to clean them up.

Mordecai raised his mug, clinking it to the Xenn’s as the ex-VSF toasted to survival. The thin man murmured the same, and took a swig of his drink. The local brew was light bodied, and rather bland. A symptom of not having access to pre-war ingredients. But it would do the job of getting one sloshed with enough consumption.

The thin scout had not been present in Carolina Place when you first arrived with five people. So the remark about dead wait was lost on Mordecai. But he had seen the new stock boy of Darrel’s and wondered.

“Yeah, heard the same from Darrel as well. Those caravans can be like lifelines out the wastes. Yet, they have a dangerous job with bandits, ferals, and the local wildlife wanting a piece of them. Now with super mutants spotted….”

The scout shook his head, and set his drink of the bar. He scratched his goatee in consideration of the second question, and then shrugged his shoulders.

“Not sure yet. Depends on if Boris has an errand for me or not. The super mutant sighting is going to have every one worried. So wouldn't be surprised if I’m asked to check out some of the other settlements. See what they've heard. Might do it anyways, if Boris doesn't ask….”

“Anyway, what about you guys now that you’re experienced some of the wasteland?”

Zak had liked what he was hearing from Mordecai about being asked to go look at other settlements. While they had been coming up with their idea, he was open to other opportunities if they presented themselves.

He shrugged with casualness and said, “Well, we had not planned to sit around here for long. I suppose if Boris offered to pay us for a job, like he would do for you, we would probably do it.”

“But come morning we are thinking to do our own scouting and scavenging until the caravan might come, since we are not expecting Boris to ask.”

“Even if our effort doesn’t produce something of great value, as long as it helps with getting some more caps, then it is better than just hanging out spending them, yeah?”

“Where are the other settlements, Mordecai?”

Robin hooked his feet around the barstool and sipped at his drink. He was curious, because they really hadn’t heard much about the other settlements at all. Were they bigger than Carolina Place, he wondered, or smaller?

“Do you go to them often? They know you there?”

He paused.

“If we’re all heading in the same direction, would you be willing to show us the way?”

"I see, I see" committed Mordecai to Zak's response. The scout did not act surprised about you all not wanting to stick around. After all, it was only the first place that you came across upon exiting the vault. And scavenging was one way to survive out in the wastes.

The scout glanced over to Robin about the question of other settlements.

"Well, I tend to roam around quite a bit."

"There are a couple of larger settlements. One up north east of the ruins at and old large mall, much like this. Concord is the name. Pretty well off as the building survived intact and is easily defended. There is also a group up at the airport north west of here that has good sized population. Plus there are dozens of smaller villages, I guess, scattered about. Rumor has it there is a ghoul town some where too. That's non-feral ferals. But they don't take kindly to visitors as most people can't tell the different between a ghoul and feral. Also, there is a Brotherhood of Steel outpost in the region as well."

"As for showing you the ropes. I think I could do that. But that all depends on what Boris has to say in the next couple of days, especially if any news the caravan brings."

Zak's did not have to fake being surprised at the information about larger settlements. He was excited at the news. Then Mordecai mentioned something else that piqued his curiosity.

The teenager asked, "What's this Brotherhood of Steel that mentioned? Do they have cars that they ride around in?"

"Or are they naming themselves after being robots? Or do they mean the steal of a sword?"

"In any case, they sound fuckin' bad ass. Just who are they?"

Mordecai took another sip from his drink at Zak’s enthusiasm about the Brotherhood of Steel.

“Eh, I suppose they might have vehicles or something. “

The scout shrugged.

“I think their name is more for the power armor they wear. And the fact they are a brotherhood of sorts. The outpost or whatever they have in the area is out of their base in the DC area, I think. Not sure about their ideology, but they do have balls as they’re about the only people that take on super mutant’s actively.”

“Power armor? What’s that like?”

Robin cocked his head, looking at Mordecai.

The technology sounded pretty advanced to him, beyond even robots and cars. The melding of man and machine had to be one of the more difficult things to pull off, and if power armor worked like he imagined it did, it probably needed to be calibrated very carefully in order to keep it from overwhelming the wearer.

He frowned. Zak had seemed to take a shine to the idea immediately, but Robin was cautious of any gang. They might protect their own, but they tended to prey on others, anyone they thought might be weak.

“Anyway, yeah, we’d appreciate it if you could show us around, Mordecai. If the timing works out and what Boris says.”

Zak’s eyebrows shot up, “Nooo kidding? Power armor sounds soooo cool.”

He was heedless of Robin’s expression and turned to him excitedly, “That is what we need, just by the sound of it. Instead of driving a tank, we could be a walking tank. Yeah, I bet that is what we would need to go against super mutants.”

“Oh man would I like to get my hands on one of those.”

With a shine in his eyes, Zak turned back to the scout and asked, “They have ball, huh? What else about them? Are they friendly to people and engage in trade?”

As they sit at the bar and discuss the upcoming days, the subject of the Brotherhood of Steel comes up and the lawmans interest is piqued.

As he sips his drink he looks at his bandaged arms, ripped up from his melee with the ferals. With even simple arm covers he could have saved himself a lot of pain. With power armour, if its anything like he imagined, he could wade into melee and feel more confident he could bust heads with less chance of damage. With his new confidence wielding his axe, the combination would be extremely beneficial.

Both Robins apparent caution and Zaks robust exuberance is not lost on the ex-VSFer. He lay somewhere in the middle. What really seemed exciting was the fact they had options. Larger settlements, out posts. It all lent to the fact that, although there were severe dangers in the Wastes, Man had learned to survive, adapt and ultimately carve out an existence for themselves.

Ultimately, the further they could get from the Vault, be it through distance or lengthy trail to follow, the better.

He thinks back to the Brotherhood if Steel.

"Without knowing a thing about this brotherhood, already they hold some high regard. Anyone who actively fights those behemoth creatures, who had enslaved those people, must have at least basic concepts if good." he says mostly to himself.

"Let's hope Boris doesn't drag his feet figuring out what he wants to do so we can get out beyond the walls again."

Although the feeling of an inevitable confrontation with someone from the Vault had somewhat subsided from earlier, it was still a predominant thought in his mind.

The scout smiled as Zak's eyes light up at the topic of power armor. True, from what Mordecai had heard and seen, who wouldn't want some of that technology. He shared some of the teenagers sentiment about how cool it would be to have a set.

"Well, from I've gathered, it's like a powered suit or something that is clamped around your body. Gives you some extra strength and protection that is for sure. Pre-war technology though, so it's rare."

The scout paused and took another drink.

"And that is kinda of what the brotherhood is about. There motto is preserving and collecting pre-war technology. But it mostly comes across as hoarding though. They don't trade it out, unless you are one of them."

"But they will trade other, more common supplies. And they are friendly and usually good nature enough to lend helping hand most of the time."

"Now about heading with you guys...Boris is probably going to wait for what news the caravan will bring. They tend to be lifelines for this sort of thing. But yeah, I can show you around when it comes to that. Be good for you guys to visit some of other settlements if you don't plan in sticking around."
