Fallout:[IC] - War Never Changes

Postby Herzog » Fri Jan 14, 2011 1:19 pm

Caught up in the conflict, you all have been marked as vagrants of Vault Security Forces, and are deemed unnecessary. While fighting rages on in the upper levels between a last ditch assault by the Black Roaches and those loyal to Overseer, the rest of you had the unfortunate luck of being confined in one of the common rooms in the lower residential levels under guard. A group of Vault Security Forces performing a sweep of the lower levels caught some of you outside of quarters during the emergency, while the others are known gang members or trouble makers caught in the initial raid in the lower levels.

While ordered to execute any gang related members immediately, the guards were convinced otherwise by Patrick Hohenstaufen. Patrick was out looking for his brother in the time of conflict, and having found Robin, had the bad luck of being rounded with the others. He did manage a convincing argument with the guards to not shoot them all, arguing that they could be reformed for the better, especially Robin with his medical skills. The guards for their part confined them for the Overseer to deal with later.

Besides Patrick and Robin, Zak and Nathan were caught up in the raid on the lower levels. Nathan, a known troublemaker, was immediately recognized and seized by the guards as an opportunity to rid the Vault of the hoodlum. Zak, who was suspected as helping the gang, was also seized when found in the lower levels.

Mercevial Xenn however, is a victim of the corruption within the Vault Security Force. Marcus O’Neil had become dissatisfied with Mercevial just and hard working attitude, and was looking for an excuse to be rid of him. The conflict with the Black Roaches provided the perfect opportunity. Citing Mercevial’s previous undercover work as a liability and having gang sympathy, Marcus had the man stripped of his duty and rank in the security forces just before the raid, and threw him to wolves. Mercevial ended up confined with the others.

Numerous Security personal armed with firearms from the armory stand guard over you. After sometime, the guards are called over the radio. Snatches of conversation about rad-roaches infestation, reinforcements, and firefighting on the upper levels can be overheard. The guards leave the room following the call supposedly to go help reinforce elsewhere. They lock the door behind you with the security lockdown code, satisfied that it will keep you all at bay. Once the guards leave, you all are free to talk amongst your selves, but one thing is obvious. Staying in the Vault probably means death by execution.

The common room you are confined in is one of those on level 10, in the northern residential wing. It has a standard size of 30x40 feet, and contains a handful of round tables that seat 6-8 people. Off in one corner is a pool table with sticks in rack on the wall. Another corner contains a tall storage cabinet along with bookshelf. There is a short bar with cabinets, and a small kitchenette along one wall with a few stools. The western wall contains a screen for a video projector that hangs from the ceiling. The door into the common room is a stand metal door, automatic door that has been locked due to the state of emergency. A small security panel is next to the door along with the controls for the lights. The walls themselves are dull grey metal common throughout the Vault, and the lighting is a harsh fluorescent light. The air has a sterile smell and taste from being constantly recycled. In the background, you can hear the a klaxon going off, while the PA repeats a recorded loop stating that the Vault is in Emergency Mode 5, and that all residents are confined to quarters, warning that those found outside will be dealt with harshly.

All five of you are in your vault jumpsuits, having been stripped of whatever equipment and such you had been carrying at the time. Left on your own finally, you are able to talk more freely amongst yourselves and make any immediate plans.

Mercevial Xenn sits on a stool near the pool table. He wears a Vault 47 jumpsuit over his solid build. He watches the guards carefully, like a predator watching its prey. When the guards get called away he curses and kicks the stool away as he stands. "Shit...Dammit!"

He glances at the others gathered in the common room for a few moments. He recognizes some of them from his time working undercover with his worst enemy, Jude Neffarian.

Although after Marcus O'Neill threw him to the dogs, perhaps Jude had a close runner up for who he'd like to kill right now.

He moves to the pool table and grabs the pool cue with the heaviest butt end. He snaps about two feet off the tip and turns it over in his hand, hefting it like a club and testing its weight. He takes a few swings through the air.

He turns and addresses the others in the room. "My name is Mercevial Xenn." He pauses for a moment. "Until recently I was part of the Vault Security Force. And I think I can tell you this with great certainty."

"If we don't get the hell out of here, the VSF is going to kill every last one of us."

“You mean, go outside the Vault?”

Robin was sitting in the corner near the bookshelf, his arms wrapped around his skinny legs. His chestnut hair fell in lank locks around his face, hiding his eyes.

He was wearing the same Vault jumpsuit as the others. It hung loosely around his thin frame. The collar was ripped, the ends hanging open loosely at his throat. His mouth was bruised and swollen.

When he spoke, it was with an incongruously deep voice, a perfectly pitched baritone.

“I’ve heard there’s a way to get to the get to the Vault doors that doesn’t involve the main elevators.”

Behind his bangs, Robin’s gaze flittered across the room, sizing up each man in turn. Most were young, around the same age he and his brother. One had a bruised face and brown hair that was closely cropped against his skull. The other one had dark brown hair worn smoothed back from his forehead.

The tall, muscular man who had spoken first was different.

He was older than the rest of them by at least ten years, and looked more solidly built, with broad shoulders and a powerful frame. When he spoke, it was in deep, basso tones. His words had the ring of utter self-assurance. A star-like scar branded his cheek and bespoke his experience.

Robin lifted his gaze to the man who had identified himself as Mercevial Xenn.

“You have to bring me with you, though.”

Patrick is unusually quiet. Sitting not far off from Robin as he sizes up those around him and he wonders how he's going to get out of this one. It's clear the two are related, in fact they're they're nearly identical. The few major differences being that his hair was a bit shorter and more orderly, clearly styled with the intent to impress, and his Jumpsuit was impeccably clean and only loose enough to leave his thin frame somewhat ambiguous. He had the same hair, eye color, face, and even build as his brother, but his demeanor was clearly different as he sat upright at the table closest to Robin, between him and the rest of the room, almost as if he were being protective.

Still despite his confident stance, he was not feeling exactly confident at that moment. It seemed like the whole world was falling apart around him, and now Robin was talking of leaving the Vault? The only home they'd ever known. They'd heard about the outside. The irradiated wasteland left over from the war. He couldn't imagine it was inhabitable. And what about his friends? His mother, his real mother that had took him in even when she didn't need to. Would they be alright? Again, it seemed like the end of the world. Everything he knew, coming to pieces. He was amazed the usually timid Robin was keeping it together. Not that he really knew his brother anymore. After all that time with the roaches... He had no idea what they'd done to him. For all he knew all those people who'd believed the bullshit about him joining willingly were right. With everything going on now, it was just an ideal time for doubt and resentment to creep in. He wouldn't have been in this mess if he hadn't been trying to find Robin, and now here he was... and he had no idea what to say to him.

The others were mostly around his age. He had no idea if they'd be any help in getting out of here. Getting out of this situation that is, he still didn't think they could seriously leave the vault. One of them looked like a typical dumb bully. Probably easy to manipulate, but not the kind of person he'd ever want to be around for an extended period of time. The other was even less descript. He wasn't even sure what he could possibly be doing here. Probably just at the wrong place at the wrong time. They would probably have been friends if he'd ever met him before. There was something odd about him thought that he couldn't quite place. Then there was the only adult, Mercevial. He'd seen him before on patrol he was certain, but never once had a reason to talk to him. What was a VSF even doing here? Shouldn't he be out threatening decent people while avoiding the criminals? It seemed like the only competent person in the leadership was Ms. Givens. Still despite whatever opinions he might have on the man, his words had the ring of truth to them. Things were going insane. The question is, what could they do about it?

"Robin, that's crazy. We can't leave the vault. There's nothing out there. What's the use of getting out of this if we just starve or turn into some sort of radiated mutants?"

Zak has been sitting in the corner, watching and waiting for the rest of the damned to decide on what to do. He is pretty much familiar with the gangers and even the former security officer, Xenn. He hasn't had much contact with Patrick though, but he had heard there was a brother.

Somewhere along the line, he fucked up and got caught up in this predicament. The tightrope he had been walking, must have put him into a situation he hadn't foreseen. However, after looking back, he is not sure what he could have done.

On hearing mention of a way out to the surface, Zak remembers rumors of such as well, but says nothing yet.

Shaking off the melancholy and self-pity, he decides it is time to do what he normally does, find a way to make himself useful. He stands up and begins opening drawers in the kitchenette, the bar's cabinets and the storage cabinet next to the bookshelf, looking for things that will help him get the door open. With his skills at jury rigging things, who knows what he might find useful, Pity, they took my backpack away. I had tools in there, but then again I also had the makings of a bomb too. That would have been helpful, for damn sure.

<<OOC: I have plenty of skills that could be applied. If I need to roll any let me know or go ahead and roll them for me.>>

Nathan sits at the bar, eyes downcast as he probes his bruised eye with trembling fingers. The guards had been unnecessarily rough, throwing him face-first to the ground despite the fact that he had been doing nothing wrong. He had told them as much, but they had replied only by putting pressing a boot to his back and shoving him back down. Their excuse was that it was illegal for one to be outside of his quarters during an emergency, but Nathan has dealt with the correction services often enough to know that they have a grudge against him.

As the others being to talk, Nathan listens with mild interest. He recognizes the first man to speak, the one who introduces himself as Mercevial Xenn, but he is unable to remember where he knows him from. Is he a member of the Roaches? Or perhaps a member of the security forces? If he is a member of the Roaches, he must have been high-ranked and seldom seen, or Nathan would remember him. Either way, his suggestions seems to make little sense. If we leave, we'll just be caught again...

It is only when Robin, or Robin's brother, says it bluntly that Nathan understands that the big man had meant that they should leave the vault, and not simply the room. That's even crazier!, he thinks, scowling as he looks up.

He knows Robin as a member of the Roaches, but he had never known that there was a brother. Of course, they have never worked together and aren't particularly close. A fellow member had once told him that Robin, and Zak too, were not real Roaches. They did some work for the group, but they did it for themselves and didn't really care about the Black Roaches as an organization. They don't have the Roaches tattooed on their hearts...

Nathan finds himself nodding to himself when Robin, or Robin's brother, reminds the other that the land outside the vault is uninhabitable. Leaving means death as surely as staying, it will only be a slower, more painful death...

When Zak moves behind the bar and begins looking through the cabinet, Nathan stands up and joins him. "What are you doing?", he whispers, keeping his voice low enough to avoid being heard by the others. "Are you thinking of trying to leave?".

Normally, he would never have approached Zak in such a way. He knew of him, but he doesn't remember them ever interacting in even the simplest way. Still, Zak is a member of the Roaches, so he is as close to a friend as Nathan has, at least in this room.

Xenn glances over at the two near the bookshelf. They were obviously twins but it was as if multiple personalities had manifested themselves and split into two distinct beings.

The one sitting at the table had a quietly manipulative way about him but the one sitting in a full defensive position, ...his brother called him Robin, I believe...was the one who spoke. He glanced at the other two near the kitchenette before approaching the brothers.

The VSF officer looked at the one at the table for a moment before speaking. "What's crazy is staying in a place where death is a certainty. Out there might be a graveyard waiting to happen...then again, it might not."

Xenn looks down at the Robin. There was something about him that reminded him of his brother Aash which made a false sense of a connection. He nods to Robins proposal. "You get me to the vault doors and you needn't be alone when we get outta' here."

Robin nodded, swiftly.

“It’s a deal,” he said to the former security officer.

He pushed himself to his feet, sparing a single glance toward his brother. His lip curled faintly. His eyes were cold.

“Stay here, then.”

His words were colder.

Then he walked over to Xenn and nodded.

“We need to get out of this room first. We should search this place of anything useful, then we should go, as soon as we can.”

Mercevial feels the icy venom dripping from Robins words to his brother but ignores it. He nods to the boy. "Find what you can. Anything we can use as a weapon, food or water." He glances at Robins brother with a slight shrug before moving to the security panel.

He knows Marcus probably voided his security clearance when he decided to wreak his corruption upon him but he remembers another VSF member using his security clearance quite openly. He hopes the cockeyness of the VSF officer will work out in his favour. He also hopes that only a select few of the VSF know he's been black balled from the force.

He presses code: 2-2-1-9-6 into the security console, involuntarily holding his breath as he does.

Zak’s rummaging around in the kitchenette cabinets and drawers reveals the common rooms stock of pots, pans, dishes, plates and glasses. Next to the sink and below it, you find a couple of wash clothes, as well as some dish detergent. In one drawer, Zak finds an assortment of cooking utensils, including a fairly sturdy kitchen knife, and a can opener. Another drawer contains the standard eating utensils.

In the storage cabinet, you find an assortment of card and party games, as well as the rack and balls for the billiards table. The bookshelf contains a few old pre-war magazines and books, most of which are fairly worn, and have a layer of dust.

---

As Mercevial holds his breath during the brief second after punching in the security code, the pad emits a chirp, and the sound of the door unlocking can be heard.

Zak doesn't stop his searching and replies to the ganger, "I think we need to get out of here and I am looking for anything that might help. Can you hold this pot?"

Taking a couple of wash clothes, he ties them to make a crude shoulder strap for his makeshift container, wishing again he had is backpack still. From the kitchenette, he takes the can opener, some eating utensils, some cooking utensils, and the sturdy kitchen knife. He takes the dish detergent as well.

Patrick is clearly hurt by his brother's words and tone, but his efforts to hide it at least make it less apparent just how hurt he is. of course he deserved it in a way. He wasn't there for Rob when he needed him. When they killed dad and took him, when mom died. But he didn't owe his parents anything. They'd been happy to see him leave. What happened wasn't his fault in any way. It was the roaches' fault. He wasn't sure how or even if he could convince him of that though.

Patrick stares in disbelief as the door slides open. "Look, even if we do get outside and don't just drop dead, we don't even know where to go. We don't even have a map for all the good it'd do us. We have to at least get that." He glances around at the others in hopes of finding some support.

Zak ignores the twin that is talking about the dangers of going topside, as he is in agreement with the ex-VSF thug. Figuring that the man was caught up in the sweep for a reason, he might not be that bad. Zak wasn't really part of the gangs and he did get along with some of the okay guys on the other side. But he firmly believed that the overseer was a prick asshole and he had no intentions waiting around like some dumb fuck to be executed. No way!

As Xenn mentions water, Zak double checks for suitable containers to carry it in, "Lemme check."

Then he looks at the billiard balls and looks for a container to carry those in as well, possibly a pillow or seat cushion that can be turned into a sack.

"I guess", Nathan says, grabbing the indicated pot and holding it for Zak as he gathers a bunch of junk from the cabinets. Thinking nothing of it, he grabs a simple butter knife from the pot and slips it up his sleeve. It may not stab as well as a real knife, but it can pierce the skin if enough force is applied.

Nathan nearly jumps at the sound from the door. Did he unlock it?, he wonders, licking his busted lips nervously as he stares. He turns back to Zak. "Do you think we can trust him?", he asks, whispering. "He was VSF. This could all be a big trap!". If they follow him, he could lead them straight into the execution room.

Zak shruggs, "Dude, until he opened the door, we were locked up awaiting execution. No need to trick the condemned, I think. Besides, I have heard of him, and he is not one of those corrupt prison guard asshole types that are common among the VSF."

He hands Nathan a few billiard balls to put in his pockets, "You throw and score with one of these, you might be able to knock someone out if we run into trouble."
