Re: Night Oasis Tales (Pre-Game IC)

Settling their bill, the group makes their split for the moment, searching through the town for horses and a guard to accompany them. The horses are quite simple to find, with merchants selling their wares all throughout Eto. One of the merchants, an older Keleshite man with graying hair and dark robes, agrees with Jaha and sells best horses he has available. "Good eye, friend! These are the finest mounts in all of Eto, you'll find. You won't be disappointed." He appears not to be lying.

The items are similarly easy to purchase given the nature of the town. A young Garundi woman has several supplies at her stall that she eagerly sells to the group. She smiles and comments, "Given your purchases, I'm guessing you'll be visiting the Pyramid of the Pharaoh of Sphinxes? Try to be careful, it's probably really dangerous there." She says with a smile.

Lastly, Laria manages to find a strapping young guard, a Garundi male, amongst the caravan she went with. He is equipped with studded leather armor and wields a shortspear. He says to Laria, "I, Rashid, would be honored to join you on your expedition...for a fair price, of course. Gold is as precious as water, you understand." He extends a palm out to accept some coins, then nods in agreement to go with the group.

When Jaha and Delvin leave the inn, Jaha is secretly relieved to see his mule still tethered to the post where he left it. He settles his debts with the small children, then leads the way towards the caravan district at the edge of town, where the stables and pens are.

Guided by an increasing smell of animal and dung, they eventually arrive at the caravan district where horses, donkeys, camels and other livestock are bought and sold. Having picked a likely stable, Jaha spends considerable time identifying the best horses amongst the available animals, all the while ignoring the horse merchant who has evidently spotted a potential business opportunity. He eventually deigns to address the merchant: "Good afternoon, my friend; I see I have arrived just in time! I may be able to help you avoid a bad business decision! Surely you were not thinking of selling these animals? Look at them: everyone can see they are on their last legs! Please, allow me to help you by taking them off your hands; I promise I won't tell anybody!" They proceed to haggle happily, in accordance with ancient custom, until Jaha and Delvin obtain the animals, saddles etc. needed for this venture.

NB assuming we have some time, Jaha will take 20 on his Appraise roll (result:22) to identify exactly which animals to buy. He will then spend as long as it takes to seal a deal, using a combination of Sense motive (Taking 20 result: 26), Bluff (T20 result: 21) Diplomacy (T20 result: 21) and possibly even Intimidate (T20 result: 21) to get what he wants for a reasonable price.

Delvin finished his juice and set the cup back down on the table. The business of shopping list was concluded and now they just needed to find everything.

The gunslinger stood up.

"Alright, meet back here in the evening, then?"

Delvin grabbed his back and nodded towards Jaha.

"I'll come with you. Once we have the horses, we can use them to haul the rest of the gear."

With that, the gunslinger headed for the door.

Jaha nods, satisfied that the others are also ready to get going. "I can see a man about a horse - in fact, I shall go see him to entice him with an offer he will be unable to refuse! A thoroughbred mule, well watered, smelling of chrysanthemums and not at all stubborn, in exchange for this horse, rough of hide and cloven-hoofed, which everyone can see is worth less than half the asking price... I'll be doing him a favour, really. Would anyone care to join me on this errand? And where and when shall we meet again, after completing our purchases?"

He smiles as he already imagines bargaining with the horse traders, then gets up, eager to be off.

Laria shook her head and finished the last of her fruit juice.

"I think we are about ready to go visit the merchants. Time flows though its bed and stops for no one... at least no one normal. Someday perhaps I shall master time to be able to stop its flow if I continue my studies."

Catching a hold of her errant train of though, Laria rose from the cushion and said, "Let us go see a man about a horse or two. Perhaps we should split up to accomplish the tasks without letting so much time flow past. Two can see about the animals and tack. Two can purchase the items on our list. And, one can investigate hiring a caravan guard."

"In fact, I think I know where to find a guard for hire. The might be one available from the last caravan I arrived with."

Delvin made another mental note about the marbles. It was another good idea.

“Right, got it.”

It seemed they had everything covered. Now just to purchase the equipment and pack everything up.

“So we should be able to acquire all of this today and then be ready to leave tomorrow.”

“Is there any other business we should look to take care of?”

Much like Damios, Ramses has been listening rather than contributing. He prefers letting his allies draw their own conclusions instead of influencing them with his words. They seem to be hitting on all the points he would have, anyway. On top of all that, since he has no gold to contribute, it means he would not feel that comfortable with suggesting how to spend their money. The positive aspect of it is that he has the necessary equipment to take care of himself fairly well. He should be able to make up for his lack of funds with his usefulness in the pyramid, or so he hopes.

When there is a gap in the conversation, Ramses nods toward the gunslinger. "Thank you for the offer, Delvin. I'll be certain to return the favor once we arrive." He taps the sleeve of his garments. "This clothing is suitable for the heat. Other than that, I can say that I do have an inkpen and parchment, though unfortunately, I ran out of ink a few days ago. I also possess flint and steel, along with some standard equipment for sleeping outdoors, such as a bedroll and blanket. So don't worry about covering me in those regards."

After a moment of contemplation, he adds, "I have four potions as well. One gives invisible armor, one grants a brief burst of power, and two are for invisible shields. Since Ammon makes physical armor useless, I tend to use spells such as the armor one on myself. But if anyone else can benefit from them, you are welcome to them. Otherwise, I am a bit lacking in what else I can offer from an item standpoint. I can heal myself when fused with Ammon, but that about covers it." Ramses offers a small bow of his head. "My apologies for not having more."

With a slight shrug, Ramses takes a sip of juice and states, "I agree that trying to sabotage others would bring unwanted attention upon us. Your suggested purchases seem good. I have little else to offer in those regards." Considering that matter settled, he decides to wait and see if anyone else has a suggestion.

Damios was quiet during the discussion of what they should bring. It seemed as though they had a firm handle on what gear might be needed once they reached the pyramid. At the expression that they might partake inn sabotage he comments,

"I'm not against some competition, but in this case I think I must agree with Delvin, best not to present ourselves as targets to other explorers as long as we might avoid it. I must admit, I find the idea that we will be pitted against the defenses of the lair, as well as other adventurers... ...intriguing."

As the list of equipment grows, Damios smiles, "And let us not forget, anything that weighs us down too much we can leave behind on the return trip if we must make room for treasure." He finishes with a wink.

Jaha nods politely as various people raise concerns about his suggestion. "Fair enough then, let us not delay any further, and put some distance and dust between ourselves and the competition! These are all good suggestions of equipment to bring. I do have some few gold coins to contribute as needed - though I think some serious haggling will be necessary if the good merchants of Eto are not to bankrupt us before we even leave town. As for other possible suggestions of equipment, how about a grappling hook, and some marbles to determine slope and tilt? Not to mention that they might come in handy when thrown under the feet of someone trying to catch you! Finally, I have heard of collapsible poles - perhaps such a thing might be more suited to exploring cramped tunnels and passages?" He finishes his drink, suddenly impatient and eager to spring into action.

Laria shrugged, “A ten foot pole is longer than a longspear by a few feet, is it not? I am not sure I would want to risk my weapon on a trap instead of the pole either.”

The list was getting larger, however nothing else was coming to her mind. Even so, all the equipment was likely to fit on the mounts in saddlebags. She was expecting the horses to be laden enough no matter what, so adding a pack horse to try preventing all of the mounts from being encumbered was not going to be very likely.

Delvin smirked at the Laria. Her list apparently contradicted what she just said. But no matter, they were all good things.

"Right," the gunslinger begin ticking off things with his fingers.

"Horses, campsite gear, shovels, buckets, rope, crowbar and axes, spikes, chalk, parchment and ink...."

"What about a longspear for a pole?"

The gunslinger was wondering who's be carrying all this gear once inside the pyramid. He looked to Jaha, Damios, and Laria. Only Laria appeared be wearing armor not considered light.

As for slowing down other groups, the gunslinger shrugged his shoulders at that.

"Perhaps leaving quickly and beating every one there is best. I would not to piss off groups that they would ambush us on the way out....not that unsavory types might do that anyways."

Laria shook her head.

"Delvin, sorry that is about all... Umm, add a few shovels too. We might need to dig out sand. Probably need some extra buckets. Maybe we need some crowbars and axes too. Maybe parchment and charcoal pencils to make maps to keep from getting lost. Oh, some chalk perhaps to mare our passage for the same reason..."

"Plenty of rope and extra sacks, of course... Hammer and spikes to keep doors from closing..."

"Maybe a 10 foot long pole to poke things from distance?"

Laria considered the pranks and maliciousness that Jaha was presenting and shook her head. "I do not know I can do such a thing. You might have to conduct such things without me or not tell me about them either."

"Though, perhaps some false rumors or something could work just as well... Or maybe if we hurry, that would be enough?"

Jaha grins disarmingly as his suggestion is questioned. "Have no fear, good friends! I was merely considering, hypothetically as it were, that all these would-be adventurers will need mounts of some sort just like ourselves. Such numbers of animals would naturally be stationed in corrals on the edge of town. It just strikes me that, were these animals to escape temporarily, as it were, once we ourselves had made our purchases, it might cause our competitors some delay. Of course, I am happy to defer to you all in this matter." He carries on sipping his drink as if his scheme is the most natural course of action in the world.

Delvin looked at the other two for their input. Ramses would probably defer since he was already being spotted money as it was. Damios hadn't said one way or the other with the horses or a guard. But with every one else on board, the decision was mostly made for the group.

"Alright, so wages for a guard, a dog, and horses. Campsite gear and tents. Anything else?" He plodded the others.

At Jaha's suggesting of sabotaging other adventurer groups, Delvin narrowed his eyes. The gunslinger wasn't against such acts, but with some many people in town because of the rumors, he wondered if it would worth while.

"Aye, Jaha, what do you have in mind?" Delvin said curiously.

Laria was not sure if carrying capacity of a bunch of mounts was an issue. Five horses could carry a lot of gear and if they were heavily laden on the return it would not matter so much.

"Oh, I think we might be fine with horses. Less time will flow as they move much faster than we, but a mule does not. We would also need a spare horse for a hired guard too, yes? Perhaps one guard and a dog or two to help aid him in protecting our horses and campsite while we are inside."

She blinked a few times at Jaha's mention of a little sabotage. She was not so sure about being party to such things. She asked carefully, "What are you meaning, Jaha?"
